Atlanta-based carrier to launch ultra-long-haul premier routes from Hartsfield-Jackson to Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, while streamlining international operations with the Boeing 787.

ATLANTA, GA — In a bold and monumental step forward for its long-haul international network, AirTran Airways is proud to announce a firm order for five state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range) aircraft. This strategic widebody acquisition will serve as the cornerstone of AirTran's new premier intercontinental service, unlocking non-stop global destinations directly from the airline's primary hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

Recognized as the world's most capable ultra-long-range airliner, the A350-900ULR will allow AirTran to connect Atlanta directly to distant economic and cultural centers across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. By leveraging the aircraft's revolutionary range and fuel efficiency, AirTran will bypass traditional layover hubs to offer nonstop service to markets previously out of reach.

To match the extraordinary capability of these new routes, all five Airbus A350-900ULRs will be outfitted with AirTran's acclaimed AirTran One cabin suites. Passengers booked on these ultra-long-haul flights will experience the ultimate in private luxury, featuring the airline's signature First Class full-layback suites and Premium Business suites designed to deliver unmatched comfort on journeys spanning upwards of 15 to 20 hours.

Strategic Fleet Harmonization: Transitioning from the A380 to the Boeing 787
As part of AirTran's ongoing commitment to operational efficiency and elevated passenger comfort, the airline also announced a major evolution in its broader widebody strategy. While the iconic Airbus A380 has served the airline exceptionally well on initial international routes, AirTran has made the deliberate choice to phase the A380s out of its fleet.

To maximize fleet commonality, reduce operating complexity, and further improve overall cabin comfort and passenger wellness on international flights, AirTran is transitioning its core international widebody operations entirely to the advanced Boeing 787 family.
