New carrier takes delivery of its first McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and announces scheduled service connecting Atlanta to Charlotte, Orlando, Reagan National, and Washington Dulles.

ATLANTA, GA — AirTran Airways has officially received its Part 121 Air Carrier Operating Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), marking full regulatory clearance to commence scheduled commercial operations. In conjunction with this milestone, the carrier has formally established its corporate headquarters and operational base at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

To support its commercial debut, AirTran Airways has taken delivery of its first aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83. Known for its dependable range, quiet passenger cabin, and operational efficiency, the MD-83 will serve as the backbone of AirTran's launch schedule.

With the FAA permit secured and its flagship aircraft delivered, AirTran Airways has opened reservations for its initial flight network. Daily direct flights from Atlanta (ATL) will serve the following premier leisure and business destinations:
