Kyiv not Kiev

Probably time to rename Ukranian cities according to their Ukranian spelling instead of the current Russian versions.

Kiev -> Kyiv
Dnepropetrovsk -> Dnipro
..etc

AWS uses the English spelling which indeed is closer to the Russian.
Otherwise, we can also rename Brussels as Bruxelles, Moscow as Moskva, etc...
Or Sami get wild and we will have Pariisi, Lontoo, Lissabon, Kööpenhamina... etc

Except if one goes to Google Flights in English it is Kyiv, and not Kiev.
Same with other airports such as Dnipro etc...

i am afraid that AWS is not very consistent on that... considering there is places like dÜsseldorf or tromsØ
so not a very english spelling always

As mentioned in the other thread, you can update the names using the airport data tool (see the other subforum).And this way we can make the name changes realistic and historically accurate.

... sort-of on the same subject... having grown up in South Africa and flown dozens and dozens of times on SAA and other South African airlines (Sun Air / Flightstar / National / Comair / SA Airlink.....)  I have always wondered why on earth the given national registration for South African aircraft in AWS is always ZU  when in reality all I've ever know to be used on civil aircraft registered in South Africa is ZS   ?   (ZU might still be one of the acceptable ones ....but has very minimal usage IRL)

From Wiki, so take with a grain of salt but seems to agree with what you are saying.

ZS   ZS-AAA to ZS-ZZZ (type certified aircraft)
ZT   ZT-RAA to ZT-RZZ (type certified rotorcraft) and ZT-TAA to ZT-TZZ (civil RPAS)
ZU   ZU-AAA to ZU-ZZZ (non-type certified aircraft). From 1921 to 1929, G-UA.

All I know (and especially my dad too - also plays this game) when I grew up as a kid in South Africa I sort of knew all the registrations of all SAA planes (sad person I know    ). Up until about 1990 - ish... there was only really South African Airways with any commercial flights around SA and DEFINITELY everything was ZS-   (I still remember my most flown SAA plane was ZS-SIH with the name "Kei" - all the 732s were names after rivers in South Africa.

Then in the 90's I went back to live there between 93 and 98 and there were numerous other airlines by then.... Flightstar / Sun Air / Comair - BA / Nationair / SA Express etc..... EVERYTHING had  ZS-    and today in 2022 though I long since left SA, I still see they only really actively use ZS-

you either name Kiev after it's presumed founder, the Kyi dynasty, or after Kievan Rus, which it was the capital of.

It's got very little to do with Russian or Ukrainian spelling. The English spelling has always been Kiev. The Russian spelling is Киев.


Dnipro is the English spelling and the Russian spelling is Днепр or Dnepr... Never is the O used by Russians.

So basically what you are asking (and I agree with that) is to change the names for Ukrainian cities from English, back to Ukrainian.

I think the English spelling has changed of late, for some peculiar reason; we call it Kyiv now, and proudly so.

So why do 'we' call the capital of Ukraine by it's Ukrainian name but butcher German city names?

München, Köln, Luzern, Wien, etc...

Good question, as French names are not butchered. I'm especially thinking about Marseille, so often slaughtered Marseilles in english.
