Retracting Alliance Invitations

Is there a way to cancel or retract an invitation to join an alliance?  I know that the system gives you 12 months to make a decision and you can always pm the person to find out if they are still thinking about things, but in some cases the person does not respond to any inquiry and is just sitting on the invite with no intention of joining (or has accidentally deleted the invite), which prevents others, that really want to join, from joining. 

If nothing can be done, what do you think about at least having a way to shorten the time frame, if there is another interested party waiting in the wings?
