Tech-stop flights vs Direct flights

I would like to ask how much is exactly the penalty on tech-stop flights, when direct flights is present on the same route. :)

Sami

Hard to give a direct answer but it's built in so that the longer the flight time, the less the paxes wish to travel on that flight. And additional landing also decreases the desirability.

Okay, just an example, both airline flying the same type of plane, DC-10, on a route with 300 Pax/day. One with tech-stop but one without, the LF will be differed by?

In DotM, my f100 flight from SVO-BAH with a tech stop has 66 Y, 3 C pax, and 63 Y, 3 C pax on the return flight.

My direct a320 flight on the same route has 66 Y, 3 C each way.

Isn't imply that no major difference in between?

In my experience flying A306's and 757s with tech stops, I have not found a significant difference in load factors.  The more important question is a cost/profitability comparison of a tech stop route versus a non-tech stop route.

Lets say there's a 10% revenue penalty for a tech stop route versus the same route non stop, but you're flying a plane that costs 25% less per trip than one capble of the non stop.  In that case, you're making more money on the tech stop than you would in a non-stop scenario. I'd say this is a very common scenario due to how high priced widebodies are to acquire compared to 757s.

hi, I'm using a lot of tech stops for the first time with my airline in Ethiopia in DOTM and the LF is fine/consistant with demand.  I also have a route with a n/s and a one-stop to fit the demand profile and both have about the same LF.  the real issue to consider, as Sami notes, is the cost tradeoff.  routing a plane within range means you are likely to get 2-3 routes covered every day (i.e. maybe 300pax)  using a 737 on a 1 stop of 3000nm to cover a 100 seat demand means you are only getting 100 pax out of the same plane.  as a result the ey is to keep tabs on the cash generation potential.

But keep in mind that if you add a tech stop 1/2 way, it cuts down on fuel costs...
