Game world naming

I am hoping to incorporate such changes in the long term that AirwaySim game worlds would be (almost) open ended. In other words there would be 4-5 game worlds running in parallel, with each starting from 1950 and ending in 2020/2030. Worlds will be of course sequenced so that each of them is at a different era (early, "jet age", "80s", "90/2000", "modern") at any given time. (demo and beginner worlds would keep their present status)

This would bring in first of all plenty of choices for the players, and no need to worry about game world start times and end times - they can hop in at any time they wish. Also this would eliminate the need for drastic changes to aircraft market and such things as game world start would be a rare occasion and always at the year 1950. Naturally some changes are needed like perhaps slot quotas and better handling of aircraft returned to lessors to avoid aircraft shortage for new players.

Now the question. Currently worlds are named according to their era and time. But if the world time is "rolling" and always runs 1950-2020, this naming does not work any more. So please throw in ideas for replacement naming convention for this type of games.

A simple world 1, world 2, world 3 etc would suffice for me, you could include say for example:

World 1 (Currently Jan, 1st 2011 "Modern Age")
World 2 (Currently Jan, 1st 1950 "Early Age")
Etc.

Hard to beat in my opinion. I like that it says what the current era would be too.

Just a unique name for each game world, you could number them, name them after birds, precious stones, I don't know.
CEO of South Where Airlines (SWA|WH)

Bolier Dweller

What about, The Age of the Airline, Longivity world, Rise and fall of the Airline, Concensetity world, Gurid your lorins,

LemonButt

Name them after famous aviation related people:

Orville Wright World
Wilbur Wright World
Charles Lindbergh World
Amelia Earhart World
Neil Armstrong World
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin World
Sir Thomas Sopwith World
William Boeing World

etc.

There is a few years' worth of names for you already :)

Aircraft...

Concorde, Spitfire, Constellation, Dakota, Viscount etc etc

I second (third?  ???)  J. Oates' and alexgv1's suggestions... Have a fixed name for the world, appended with the current era the world is in.

I don't think the fixed name should be anything that is in use in the game, like aircraft or airport names, because it could lead to confusion of players thinking the game prefers those aircraft or airports.
But having some otherwise aviation-related names would be cool.

Rolling worlds sounds like a great idea.  Numeric numbering is just fine.  Once the games are in progress, it is easy to see when the game world really started (it is shown on the game selection screen).

The problem with availability of aircraft is generally an issue of first 4 to 8 years, until the demand that's there is satisfied (and then some - for competition).  After that, aircraft is plentiful.

As opposed to limiting the slots (slot quotas), I would prefer dynamic slot growth, based on demand for slots.  The slot quotas will never work.  Dynamic growth of slots would make sure thare are always some slots available, and no airport would be completely slot locked.  Being slot locked for 70 game years does not sound like fun or game.  It is more like being in prison.

Airports being completely out of slots is the single most frustrating thing about AWS.  Airports grow in real life based on demand, and so should they in AWS.  Even the notorious LHR may get an extra runway...

Can you create a database of names and descriptions that come up as time passes...so the name corresponds to the date in any given world?

eg. 2005 - Fuel prices rising, etc, etc, expect challenges etc etc...a new generation of aircraft are in development...

Independent from some scenario description or individual game world name there should be something like "World 1", "World 2" etc. So mabye "World 1 - oil crisis" or "World 5 - The new century" to make some clear difference. This is important for forums and discussions. Imagine there are three or four worlds with "The new century" and one opens a bug report... a short unique name everybody knows is mandatory.

To be honest, I don't like the idea at all.

I don't like playing before the 90's, and What will happen when I enter a game world that has already lasted for 40 years... It's all settled already and I don't have a chance to start up.

Sorry,

But no thanks.

There is almost  oilcrisis in all the "Modern Times" game session.

Once the games get going on regular pace, this shouldn't be a problem.
There will be few people playing all the way from 50s to 90s, so everyone has to start in the middle. And even if they have started in the 80s, so what? There's still plenty of potential for you, because even after playing for years, I doubt people will have perfected their airline against competition. Especially when new aircraft come out, don't think many will have the patience to update their whole fleet to more economical one.
Furthermore, people who like to play in the 70s may also drop out from the world at 90s, thus creating large open markets for newcomers.

Depends if Sami does anyting with availability of slots at airports that need slots.  If the slots are what they are right now, that may be the biggest issue.

OTOH, the used market will likely be flooded with aircraft, so starting out anywhere in the middle of the game should be reasonably easy.

I would love to see this idea implemented!! :)

I like Game World 1, Game World 2 etc; simple and easily identifiable.

I agree with this and the previous posts like it. Would keep thing a lot easier.

PS Any idea on the date and name of the next world starting. DOTM is rapidly drawing to a close.......  :)

JumboShrimp

When will these new long running game worlds be implemented?  V1.3?

slither360

As a replacement to the currently ending DotM?

(I can be hopeful, can't I?)

Perhaps someone can make a 'timeline'.

So, across the top of the Game Area, there is a timeline that stretches from left to right.  On the left you got the 1930s/40s... on the right we have the near future area ~2020.

On this chart, you will show the starting and end times for the games currently being played.

Also on this chart is the types of planes being flown.  So, from 1930/40 to about 1960 the bar is red, denoting the era of propeller aircraft.  From 1960 to 85 you have the first generations of planes and the rise of the big manufacturers.  From 1985 to 2000 you have the travel boom (Green) and 2000 to 2020 you have the era of efficiency represented in blue.

The player then clicks on a game listed on this timeline somewhere and screen #2 comes up.  This one will describe the era and types of planes flying around that time.  Give a few tips and tidbits here and there... most players already know them and I find it to be fair to give newbs a little leg up.

At the bottom of Page 2 are the unique rules to that game (start date, end date, minutes per game day...)

Would you like to confirm???  Then you put in your name, airport, and abbreviation...

I know it is sketchy, but is an idea to help some newer players understand what a game is all about.....
