AWS on Netbooks.

Sorry if this is slightly off topic, but....

Do netbooks do good with more "involved" internet websites such as AWS and such? I'm thinking of picking one up to replace my old laptop and since my phone company offers them with built in aircards and I would be opening a "new line" the netbook would be free.

Thanks!

I haven't had any problem using my 11" Asus Netbook with AWS.

I'd say it's slightly slower than my main PC (which is pretty high-end) but nothing too big.  But I've never tried to use it when doing anything with one of my larger airlines either.  Perhaps with 75 (or whatever the max) schedules on the screen at once it might have a bit of a problem as that's been fairly RAM-intensive in the past.  But then if that's a problem you can always change the setting of how many to show at once too.

I am running a samsung 10.1" with an Intel Atom processor, 2gb of ram, and Windows 7 Starter. The biggest ram hog is actually AT&T's connection manager, which sucks up about 400-500 megs of ram. If I disable that and connect to the ATT network through the Windows Connection Manager, it runs fine. I set the system to 10 aircraft on departure screen, which speeds it up significantly, but the speed is still acceptable with the default 30 per screen. The only area where AWS slows down with this machine is when waiting for the Flash pop-up when hovering over a flight scheduled to an aircraft or a specific aircraft. Sometimes that pops right up, other times it takes up to 15-20 seconds to display.

I use a Samsung NC-10 running XP SP2 more than I use my big desktop to view AWS. In fact I've been using it alone for the last two weeks. Never noticed a problem at all running AWS on it except the odd delay with the flash pop-ups.

I have a first generation net book (asus eeepc 1005he) which is running xp home on an atom 1.6ghz with a gig of ram.

Over all,i think it chugs compared to my desktop when managing a large airlineand the small screen is a royal pain to work with, though I am used to 3x 24 inch screens on my desktop.

It.s workable if I'm on the road but it doesn't work well for my playing/browsing style.

Alright cool thanks all! Here is the specs on the unit, sounds like it will do ok though.

Dell™ Inspiron™ Mini 10 (1012)
1GB Memory, 250GB hard drive
3G speeds where available
Genuine Windows® 7 Starter - 32 bit
Intel® ATOM™ Processor N450

Going to look more into it once the whole "holiday fever" slows down...thanks again!

I run this site fine on a Pentium3 800mhz, 256mb of ram. in Arch Linux. (flash blocked)
And on a Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8Ghz, 1gb ram in Arch Linux (Flash Enabled)

Also if I'm not mistaken I've used it fine on my 500mhz Windows CE 6.0 pda too (don't pull that out unless i'm at the airport) :P

What's the thing about the "flash" popups some of you are talking?  (they are not flash btw.)

Would need some more info so I could investigate ... are we talking of the small 'balloon' popups (mouseover) or the 'fullscreen' popups (ones that darken the rest of the screen, like route planning popup in new route opening menus)?  Haven't seen any issues myself.

Also just for info to all small-screen users, I'm working on finding people to update some of the site visuals and part of this may include relocation of the left-hand menu bar in order to gain more active width to the actual content. The main menu links are already in the horizontal menu as pop-downs and rest of the data (time & money) could be moved to a floating footer status bar for example.

the 'fullscreen' popups is ok on my Samsung NC10 with WinXP+FF, but it never work on my phone properly  ;) (LG GT540, ~3")

Interesting, NC10 with XP and Chrome has trouble with the fullscreen popups sometimes.

Never had any trouble with the pop ups on my Samsung netbook (same as listed above), but on my palm pre, none of the pop ups work. The full screen ones cut off making it impossible to name/register an aircraft, view complete route information, or sell/buy/lease an aircraft.

If you use Google Chrome, it's a lot faster than Internet Explorer!
