If I'm based in Los Angeles, how do I get a plane to Paris?
Do I have to fly direct or is there another way?

Any help would be appreciated.

Use a longer range aircraft like the 767-200ER, or fly to the east coast and hop over the pond.

If you can get a plane that can go far enough you can fly it direct, yes.

But if you can get a plane that can't quite make it, you can make a stopover.

To do that you pick a mid-point, let's say JFK for example, you start opening a route to JFK.  Once you select JFK, another screen comes up asking you to either continue or, further down on that page, if you'd like to add a 2nd Destination.  Change the area to Europe, then choose "View Airport List" at the bottom of that screen.  That'll bring up a list of European destinations.  Select Paris (CDG).

Then you'll see a Routing screen.  You MUST select the "Technical Stop" (Refuel only) box that's in the middle of that screen.  You then must select the top of the 2 routing choices at the bottom.  That'll make your plane go LAX-JFK-CDG-JFK-LAX.  It will stop in JFK for fuel but continue on.  You cannot stop and pick up additional passengers.  If you don't select the technical stop box you will actually create 2 seperate routes, one from LAX-JFK, all pax will disembark, then JFK-CDG, all passengers will disembark.

Sigma said everything you needed to know.

Sure it is more expensive and time consuming to have a tech stop but that may be saved in your fleet commonality if you don't have to buy a different type of plane to get to CDG from LAX.
