Lessons to learn from big airline bankruptcies

Hi,

In my previous games I operated at small airports always with a few little planes.
Throughout the game I have seen some big airlines go bankrupt and now I'm starting a new airline in a big airport and would like to know what I should do to prevent going bankrupt and how soo many big companies failed in the game.
Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it strongly depends on the circumstances. Generally, a downward spiral kicks in with a combination of many factors. E.g. fuel prices going up, no cash reserves, high number of leased planes, strong competition on the main routes, not many monopolistic routes that may compensate cash losses, fleet commonality, turnaround times leading to delays and surpressing company image, etc...
