KARACHI - With the eight leased Bristol Type 170 Mark 1 Wayfarer aircraft being stored in Karachi, Pakistan Indus Airways is using its single owned Wayfarer before definitely retiring the fleet type from service. The aircraft is expected to operate until the end of July 1957, when the next brand new Vickers Viscount 700D is scheduled to be delivered. The airline CEO however announced that the aircraft might retire earlier depending on the availability of used Vickers Viscount 700 or 700D turboprops. Enthousiasts can fly on the plane between Karachi and Bait Al Falaj (BAF) or on the domestic flight to Faisalabad (LYP) for Pakistanis who do not have a passport or visa.

The CEO had mixed feelings with the retirement of the aircraft, since it was the first aircraft type to be operated by Pakistan Indus Airways. "Our first aircraft was leased on August 1st, but we did not fly our first flight until August 14th, the independence day of Pakistan. While our replacement aircraft, the Vickers Viscount, is modern, fuel-efficient and comfortable, we still will miss the Bristol Wayfarer", the CEO said.

While Pakistan Indus Airways has retired the Vickers Viking and in process of retiring the Bristol Wayfarer, both manufacturers will still be offering services to the national flag carrier. Both aircraft types are being replaced with the Vickers Viscount turboprop, while Bristol is offering its Britannia aircraft for the longer range flights to Europe and the Far-East. In addition to Bristol and Vickers, de Havilland offered its DH.114 Heron plane for regional, low-density flights, replacing the older de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide.
