Tips for first GW start
« on: June 08, 2019, 09:23:40 PM »
Hey guys,

New player here, I have been having some fun in BW1 for a few weeks now, and am looking to start in the new GW tommorow. I still have a few small questions tough.
Do alliances usually get formed right at the beginning of a GW? And if so, would it be worth it looking for one right away?
Are there any particular things that I should now for the beginning of the world that differ from conventional wisdom?

grow as much as you can with one single fleet group in one single airport(easier said than done.....)
look for untapped destinations
read my scheduling tutorial(if not already done)
choose a fleet group available in grat numbers(easier said than done)

While there are many different strategies I find it to be especially easy/profitable to fly as many short and juicy routes as possible. LH can still follow later.

And, as for basing, avoid playing your hometown, avoid any "emotional" or "prestige" HQ until you learned how to play the game. Go to a remote / half remote place.

A lot of newbies come down and say "yay, I'm gonna bust LHR". No, you won't bust LHR, you'll get busted. Because usually at least 3-4 very experienced players HQ in every huge airports, and they know the trick, and will make your life impossible. I must say that it won't be intentional, they won't care about you, they'll care about the other big boys. But most of what they'll do to each other will have the same effect on you, and you'll most likely won't know how to fight back -> BK.

I am actually currently playing my hometown in GW3, but it is my 10th game or so. Had I began there, OTOH.....

What if my hometown fits the "remote/ half-remote" description? Still a bad idea? :)

Less of a problem, but still.

A lot of people are tempted to replicate what the local airlines did, while in the game it might not work at all.

Basically, the advice about not taking your hometown or a prestige HQ until you're not seasoned is about having enough experience to be able:
a) to take distance from reality and acknowledge you're playing a game and should play with the game's mechanics, not RL's "settings" (because they did use the 747 doesn't mean it's relevant in the game)
b) know where you're able to play and keep playing (ie, where you can fight potential competitors and where it's still too tough for you).

Indeed a problem.

Had I began to copy my hometown's schedule, I'd have flown Montpellier Nador twice a week in single-aisle bird. Kind of suicide. Daily demand is 30 per day in 2030. Maybe I'll add a s2000 before the end of GW3, but it would be more for the fun. Earlier in the game, would have been a blunder.

Hey !  >:(

Out of interest, did you use the B741/2/3s prior?

I didn't.. I found those (even) more inefficient than 747-400s. But I think with the combis getting a new lease of life, the 742 combi can be used profitably now in certain bases.

Yes, I remember a time when I could rapid expand with 742/3 with max market spending. I could hit CI 100 in just 9 months from the start of a GW..

Ah, the days of pass time.

1. Always have a good play with route planning page before taking your first aircraft, identify the juiciest markets in general terms and what aircraft are suitable. Is the top end of the Short haul market 150-200 or 250-300 pax, the first one I would play E-jets or similar, the other A320/B737 or similar.

2. When I say good play, find the lower end of the market, for example you may see a couple of juicy routes that can take B737/A320 short haul at the top end, but the rest and the most are better suited to something smaller, say E-Jet. Prioritise having the ability to do more that 1 freq per day, you can either do multiple frequencies, or when faced with heavy oversupply on a particular route, you can cut back easily and redeploy an aircraft elsewhere. Try and choose fleets with the view to being flexible and if you can't support a large fleet of the larger aircraft, get the smaller option. You have the game penalty for having more than three fleets, so far better to have 1 good general short haul fleet as opposed to 2 that cover two different short haul niches. Unless you are planning to be solely short haul operations, at which point have the aircraft to suite the niches.

Sorry Deo :P

Like it better like this: "because they did use the Tu-154 with tech stop doesn't mean it's relevant in the game"? ;)

Or: "because they did use the 707 and DC-8 and 747 and Il-62 all at the same time doesn't mean it's relevant in the game"? See what I look at? ;D

Jokes aside, Tha_Ape is correct in saying that the 747 is not very relevant in the game. One has to put in considerable time and energy in not letting it bankrupt yourself, if a decent competitor is pushing you.

One plane absolutely not to be touched by an inexperienced player till they know what they are doing.

On the other hand, Deo is right about the 747 combis, they might indeed be really good planes, as VL combis can now carry HC. Sami, what about the 744M? Boeing, what about a 748M?

Ps: Deo, your performance with the 747 is impressive, to say the least.

Only B741C is in right now, no? They also made combis for 200 and 300 iirc?
