Thanks again, I see you put a lot of work in this stuff... but actually a city means a city to me, so if I go to NYC I stay there, or in this case DC would mean DC, and nothing outside PTS-1h-radius from City Center....
Anyhow, as plans may look completely different [my dad is a trekking enthusiast and I am like 50% and he is not more than 10% into Aircraft... and we both have 0% interest in Baseball {Though I have it one term a year in sports...} it is kindof pointing at Boston furthermore :) (--> I had been looking at that Appalachian Trek as well ;D ) It seems best option... as highest possible timeframe is 1 week (October) or 2 weeks (JUL-AUG) we are pretty limited in regard to big outdoor trips.... anyhow making some miles on some of these treks seems nice too.

I will have a talk with my dad later today [3.45AM he is soundly asleep ;D ] about these ideas...

Ok, for Boston, Jul-Aug is an awful time to hike (25 degrees plus always), and it gets humid, and it isn't fall yet, so you don't get to see the magnificient colors. It also isn't very pleasant to do anything much outdoors, which makes it tough to explore the city. And if you realize that Boston is one of the colder cities in the US, you can imagine how it would be in, say Arizona.

Alright calm down, ffs!  were only trying to get fun out of your situation, Chicago really is nothing but a connecting airport...

Germans and their bloody sense of humour! what happened!?

I annoyed him the whole last day with those jokes... muahaha!

But he's from Duisburg, even holidays in outer Detroit (or Mogadishu) would increase his situation compared to his hometown :P

Door County is indeed beautiful! I'va a friend who got engaged there: I saw her pics and it is really beautiful!

Btw, I do remember there's an AFB not far from Chicago: it should be Scott AFB... It is not an "operative" military airfield and so you sshould eb able to visit it. I did the same at NAS Fallon in 2008 and it was great. Just allow the guys at the PA Office of the base two months for the paperwork but at NAS Fallon it was worth the hassle of sending them copy of my passport and other paperwork! :)

Have you considered Seattle? You can visit the Museum of Flight and take a tour in the Boeing factory.

And visit all the original places Grey's Anatomy took place! :D

As I mentioned above, I am with parents, so actually not too aviation-based stuff... that is why I canceled SEA-TAC already, as this would be a main destination :P

Currently we go through Chicago's website offering a far not as dark opinion and look at the city. Surely they want to get visitors into the town, but I think that it will be somewhere in the middle.

Another thing is, that (as a lilius pointed out on skype) I am (kindof) supposed to see all major US-cities, so I will be over the pond every once in a while ;D

The point of the trekking is what we found unnecessary to get to the USA to, as we have better place to do it in here in Germany... :P

Thanks so far -we are about to book, I will update :)

Washington DC sounds ideal.  There are plenty of museums with a sprinkling of aviation (including one of the space shuttles and the Wright Flyer) and it's definitely a big city (the Beltway is notorious for it's traffic) and there is a nice public transportation system.

Yeah the Smithsonian Air and Space museum and the Udvar-Hazy museums are great I'd recommend them if you're in the DC area. As for the city itself, you can see Capitol Hill and Washigton Monument but other than that I don't know if there's much else to do.

DC is a nice place to visit, but I still think that Boston fits what you want more - it has the temperature that you want, attractions that include a little aviation but not over the top, and tons of great museums and parks, etc., the beautiful fall foliage, and a public transport system so good that you don't even need to rent a car.

There's actually 4 space shuttles: 1 in DC, 1 in Florida, 1 in California, and 1 in New York :)
