What are the pros and cons of joining an alliance with respect to profits, LF?

Being in an active alliance has no drawbacks at all for me.  Not only does your load factor increase by between 5-10% when you join, it has other hidden benefits that may not be instantly apparent.  If the alliance is working well then you receive less competition on routes, as alliance members do not compete with each other.  If there are 25 in the alliance thats 1/16 of people in a 400 player game.

There are always people to help out regarding fleet/route decisions and in the alliance I'm in, when a large airline goes bust - someone will notice and notify the alliance.  This saves a heap of time, as people in an alliance working together can analyse a lot more data than you can on your own.  Routes/airports with spare capacity can be passed on.

Members of alliances can often sell/lease aircraft between themselves - with discounts too - as you can decide a time to exchange the aircraft, so that no-one else gets it.

The 0.8% fee that most charge is nothing in comparison to the benefits you get in a lively alliance.  Its hard to put an exact figure regarding profits, but hopefully you can see why so many people are in them.

The negatives only occur if the alliance is small and poorly run.  You still get the improvement on load factors, but if the rating is lower than the increase is less noticeable.  Without the exchange of information, the impact is a lot less.

As I'm not in this world, I don't know how many alliances there are or how active they are, but if you can find an active one to join, then I'd leap at the chance.

I hope that helps :)
