Question about production slots

I went to place an order for 10 A321-200's and saw there was an order backlog of over 1100. But when I looked at the production slots there are many avalable slots for next year.
There was enough to fill my order by May but the last aircraft is going to come early January.
I was wondering how come it is not first come first serve. It would mean I would not get my first delivery for about 30 months but I think it would be fairer.
