Viscount 700D vs Fokker 27-200

Why is the Viscount 700D so popular in Airway Sim??

Why do Sim airlines continue to use it well into the jet age - well beyond what real world airlines did?

The 700D has a crew of 3 & 2 vs 2 & 1 for the F-27.

It uses more fuel: 2.094 lbs vs 1.609 lbs.  It needs a longer runway.

Granted, it can fly farther, but why does it seem to be such a good deal for the airlines that use it into the jet age?  How can they make more money than airlines using the F27

It's been a few (real time) years since I've used them, but my memory is that there were simply LOADS of them available very cheaply whereas the production queue for F.27s was quite full.  It allowed fast expansion with low risk. This was even more important when fleet-commonality was such a big thing - once you had a couple of hundred Viscounts, it could be quite time consuming changing to something else.

As you say, the extra range was useful too. At that point in the game you should already be thinking ahead to what these aircraft will be replaced by and thus what sort of routes of that range you should even be bothering opening (i.e. will you be able to serve them long term).   I seem to remember going directly from Viscounts to the Fokker 50 but, as I say, it was a while ago.

I use the F-27 because as you noted, the V700 will have to be replaced at some point either because of age or noise certification.  The F-27 and the F-0 also have the same type rating and fit right into the F 27 schedules.

Good luck to the V700 users when it comes to replacing them; however, it is frustrating that I was once bankrupted because (among other things) a competitor entered my market with a slew of V700s.

Willem 4 you

As Knobby explained there are alot available and cheaply including large fleets need to be replaced with a 3 fleet rule(before) you could not simply add an extra fleet as the 4th fleet goth heavy penalties.

The answer is economics where capacity vs costs have to see which operates cheaper.
Now with new game rules have to see how it goes and it seems with alot available still airliners use them to grow or start up.
Also in real life alot of them went to airliners with a smaller budget or in countries where revenue is lower.

This game is not different from real life, just look further than only Midway in HaF game.

I have used both and I find the viscount vastly superior, not only in range but in capacity as well . The 800 series carries almost twice as many passengers as the f 27.
I have a ton of them in my current game and for now they give me piece of mind, they are profitable, cheap to maintain and relatively fast , they will eat Convairs and Martins alive.,
The problem with all this bonanza is that i have soo many and at some point they will have to go, and its difficult to replace them, since in my book they are fantastic machines.
I the real world they out sold the F 27 ( for a reason) and i think their flying career was longer then the F27 ...since they started much sooner.
They where still flying in Africa and South America in the 80's
If someone has a suggestion for a good replacement please let know.

P.S the viscount actually in real life had 2 pilots as well as the convair and Martin, i have complained about this to Sammy ,, but he doesent seem interested in correcting it

Viscount did require either two or three cockpit crew members. Early models definitely required 3 cockpit crew. But for later variants it depended highly on the operator and model variant, so there is no definite answer for that.

In AWS it has been modelled with 3 crew. https://www.airwaysim.com/forum/index.php?msg=509782

Fair enough ,  I know for sure that the Airspeed Ambassador was crewed by 2 , simply by reading the Munich air disaster , that destroyed a famous football team, and the 2 pilots where initially blamed for the accident. As far as the Convair i think it also had either two or three pilots , i think mostly 2.
The Martin had 2, since TWA and Eastern , followed by pacific operated it with 2 pilots. it might sound insignificant
,but these aircraft ( as you probably know) are crucial when starting a long game.
I thank you for for at least noticing my issue
cheers

As long we kind of are on this subject, I again ask you if you would please consider adding the SNCASE Languedoc to your new long games. it was not a great plane , but it existed in fairly large numbers and was operated by Air France, Aviaco., Air Liban, LOT and a few other airlines, which is a lot more that you can say about the Agusta (that no one bought in real life and in the game) or the VFW 614.
I have played your wonderful game for over 10 years now and enjoyed immensely, and I am not trying to pester you about this, I just think that at the beginning of a long game, when desirable aircraft become scarce , an alternative however mediocre did exist, and it should exist ( in my opinion) to enhance this game
The information on this aircraft is amply available on the net.
I hope you read this and give it some thought
Cheers
