Yesterday I was thinking if it would be nice to meet some AWS players in a relaxed environment while enjoying a beer on the terrace somewhere in Amsterdam or any other nice place in the Netherlands. During this meeting we can discuss all matters of the game, your goals, failures, tactics or any other things which turn up...
Please note it is a informal thing and it's only meant to meet some other players and have a enjoyable few hours with a beer in hand where everyone is welcome to join.
If a pub/terrace might be problematic due to age restrictions of some players please let me know so I can find another spot.
But before I'm going into all of this I have to know if there are people in the AWS community (preferably in the Netherlands) who would like to meet other players with a cold beer in their hands....
why AMS Maarten????
Coz you live there, dont have to travel. Your making all of us travel aye and you sit in ur backyard , hehehe, hmmm cheeky. Why not in Iceland right next to the volcano LOL, beautiful sight it will be sipping our chilled beers and watching it errupt.
VJC
Yes, extremly selfish proposal, try to come up with something serious instead.
Why would it be worth to travel all across the world to discuss some Airwaysim? We have a forum here for such things.
What's wrong with organising something in your area for people living nearby? You could do exactly the same....
As a matter of fact... AWS won't be the main reason... it's just to meet other players and have a drink... that's all.

Mja, you're allowed to have 5 grams.
No officially your NOT. That Police won't do a thing if you have it or smoke it... that's another story ;)
A conference would be cool. AMS isnt that bad since it is a major airport and we have lots of European members and AMS has good LCC connections. ORD or ATL could be another.
I'd love to see my wife's face when I tell her that I have to fly to a AWS 'convention'. I'd permanently lose points with her.

LOL! The mother of a freind of mine is a tupperware sales(wo)man, and tells all the sh#t at these meetings ;D
Anyways... I'd be in that :) but I'd come by train, since LH is too expensive (for me as student), and train is anyways faster for me :)
Any more exactly plans, like day/etc.? Thx.
I don't think my 16yrs is a prob in Nederlands... but just to notify you ;)
Hi Jona... there are 7 direct ICE services a day from Duisburg (where you live) to Amsterdam.
I do need to do something to keep my Platnium Medallion on Delta...
There's a great observation deck at AMS. Great views of all the KLM MD-11's :-)
A wee bump to the thread - I'm living in Amsterdam now so would also be happy to catch up with some fellow AWS players.
I think that's a great idea, Maarten! There's enough players in the Amsterdam area for a decent meetup (5-10 people).
Make it happen and let us know how it goes!
-Matt
We kunnen dit topic ook in het Nederlands voorzetten? Anyway, lijkt me gezellig om eens wat te doen!

ps-I think Singapore would be an amazing place but can it really support 20,000+ members comfortably? ;)
1st are we actually that much? I thought we'd be around the 5.000..
2nd why should sami take care of that, since we are organizing this ourselves! [you don't ask your teachers to organize you meeting friend after school too, do you?]
3rd AMS is just perfect... if you want to meet in SIN, do so, but remember that there are (though only 25%) many "teenies"/"kids" who either cannot afford going so far, or are not allowed to leave specific "economic areas" (e.g. I may not leave the EU without parents, since I am not 18 (having to wait for June12th 2011), and also some are restricted due to having sucking parents, not leeting them go 5000NM just for a weekend or so...
Jona L.
i can fly everywhere, where is a meeting ::)
just check out if there is a charter company providing some cheap "first class"......
i would recommend turkey.
flights are costing nearly nothing with sky hava yollari :o or a bit more with onur air :'( or a bit more more for türk hava yollari 8)
no, but really: the hotels are highly rated. i have a friend. he is one of the managers in a 5* resort near antalya. they also own their own a/c (atlas jet). we can meet at atatürk and get our exclusive flight with an old boeing ;D we also will have special conference hall and also partys and more.
Most members are in North America. So somewhere like ATL, ORD, YYZ would be best. YYZ has lots of cheap flights from/to Europe on Air Transat so European members could get there cheap.

I really doubt that many European players will go to North America for the first meeting.
The best would be to have a meeting on both side of the ocean.
maybe in the middle, as I suggested? Bermuda sounds nice, and it's fast to get to Bermuda from both Europe and North America, as well as South America. and there are great connections for overseas (Asia, Africa, Oceania) members through either JFK or MIA. :D

All AWS members (whoever can) gather and have a meeting in the morning and then see the flying display in the afternoon and have a nice meal in the evening and party till late. But with Farnborough only 2-3 weeks away its a short notice, If anyone is travelling to farnborough on th weekend please let me know, would luv to catch up with some AWS guys.

Jona said that, so I was quoting your awesome idea in a "suggestion response" i call it. maybe instead of Sami having to do the talking, everyone interested in going to SIN for the weekend for an AWS convention, write a letter/email to Singapore Airlines and just briefly explain the situation. if they get enough, they'll contact sami (make sure to leave a way to contact sami so that they can actually get in touch with him lol) and negotiate. ;)

I was under the impression that the vast majority of AWS players were in the travel industry. I am sure that we would have enough connections to set up three (NA, EU, Asia?) INEXPENSIVE meetings for the purpose of meeting our opponents and consuming beverages. I would propose that whatever setup we could arrange should be universally accessible to all. How about a challenge as follows:
1. $150 airfare from (almost) anywhere to one of the three meetings
2. $50 GOOD hotel (per night)
3. $50 conference fee - includes two meals; AWS t-shirt; meeting room; cover Sami's airfare to be there.
Locations could be:
AMS or other EU
ORD, YYZ, ATL, or LAX
SIN or other Asian
Anyone accept the challenge?

GM sounds good , but problem is $150 airfare is decent for guys in EU to travel around but what about Americas, Asia, Ocenia & Africa???
That price tag may not suit all those.
Travelling to the US is a pain (honestl) with all the strict visa procedures etc etc.
Good Idea GM, may be we may have to increase airfare budget a bit for non-eu guys and gals.

Southwest offers relatively cheap tickets to anywhere in the US. I recently got a ticket from Tucson (southwest USA) to Washington DC (northeast USA) for $108.

I'd also like to add Dulles to the list. There is a newer Smithsonian hangar there with some AMAZING planes. Some examples include an SR71, the original 707, a Concorde, and so much more.
$150 USD or even CAD is hard to come by.... I know that any Canadian can just take a road trip to the US (no visa required) and catch a Southwest, JetBlue or similar flight and be anywhere in the US for dirt cheap. I recommend YYZ though as we have one person who works for AC here, and my friend's dad handles security so we could work something out that would give us a great please to meet that isn't to the general public. That being said, there is not much in Toronto to see that's worth coming, apart from maybe the ACC, Skydome and the CN Tower. That's the main attractions and to be honest, they're not all that exciting IMO (i may be biased though because i live in Toronto ;D). the only real interesting one is the CN Tower. that's a good attraction, even for a Canadian. Maybe the Smithsonian idea would be the best. ;D

I am prepared to travel to Finland, but the problem is that it is not the most centrally located place in Europe. UK and Netherlands both have good connections via LCC, but even the bigger airliners like Luftwaffe and KLM offer good value tickets if you book well in advance.
At Amsterdam - Lelystad airport (EHLE) (opening to LCC in 2013) there is a KLM 747 which can be booked for a meting... but the 747 hostel sounds nice as well.

and with my love for pot (yes, the green leafy substance), my wife will never believe me either.
Wish I could go, I doubt I would have the time though.
When are we planning to do this meeting ?

Icelandair only flies during the summer from BRU to KEF and I don't like to swim  ;D Anyway, I think it's even cheaper to cross the pond completely to the US then fly to Iceland (though Iceland is a beautifull country).
What about a meeting in the capital of Europe (yes, Brussels that is ;D) or the capital of the US (Washington, DC). Both BRU and IAD are central located and easy to reach by plane, train and car. And you'll have to admit, Belgium has the best beers of the world

NO!!!?? Ever been to Germany? than you know what really good beer is! In Germany, in regard to the purity law, what you call beer would be named "hop-juice" or something like that in Germany, but not beer!
Though I must admit: Budweiser [the original Czech one, not the STOLEN US-VERSION!] is, in respect to being the original kind of "Pils", is one of the best...

I agree with Iceland, as it's exotic and fairly easy to get to for both parties - and I suggest having it in the summer as there are a lot of "summer-only" routes by Icelandair, so I would rather be able to have everyone at once and have them keep more money than waste their money on connecting flights through LHR or something. ;)

Yeah I've been to Germany (The Nurburgring is my favourite place in Germany next to the "Autobahn" 8)) but except some Pils beers they don't have much to brag about. Belgian beers are famous arround the world, we have hundreds of different beers in our tiny little country. From decent pils beers to very good heavy beers brewed in abbeys (trappist beers). And no, I don't think that Stella Artois is a good beer, I actually think it's dishwashing water, just like Jupiler or some dutch colored water with some foam they call Heineken) :-) But a nice Duvel, a splendid Westvleteren, a lovely Achouffe, a sensational Palm Royal, a beautiful Rodenbach, etc... To much beers to mention :)
