Title: Total close down of UK airspace!
Post by: NorgeFly on April 15, 2010, 09:58:02 AM
What a mess today has become here in the UK! All aircraft to be grounded from noon but most flights from northern UK airports have been grounded since early this morning...

All because of some dust!

Notice the absence of aircraft over most of the UK, at this time it should be crowded with domestic and international flights!

(https://www.airwaysim.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi564.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fss85%2Fstesaint%2Fatcmap.jpg&hash=735079f13dad6d0c3afacc543559434a7b0f4f12)

Maybe one day we will have random events like this in the game  ;D

dont start with random events.  I've begged all I could.

And wow, I never knew that CDG was so busy.

CDG will be even busier than normal as it seems there are a number of LHR bound flights that wont make it there before it closes and are diverting to CDG.

Latest is that AMS and BRU will also close later today as well as Denmark and Norway where fights have already been grounded.

Volcanic ash is a little more than just "some dust". Bear in mind it's not ash in the normal sense of the word. It's a fine powdered rock with other assorted nasties in it, namely chunks of glass. Little bit of havoc in a jet engine...  ;)

Also a quip on the matter...

Yes you're right, volcanic ash is indeed very nasty stuff when it comes into contact with aircraft. Perhaps calling it "some dust" didn't quite do it justice  ::)

Some dust is rather ignorant term of this. Not nice to have the plane sandblowed in the air, or have all of the engines shut down midair due to the stuff out there.  :P

(I'm just supposed to go to Brussels.. but let's see)

"Some dust"  :P

QuoteOn 24 June 1982, the route was flown by City of Edinburgh, a 747-236B registered G-BDXH. The aircraft flew into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, resulting in the failure of all four engines, although the reason for the failure was not then apparent to the crew or ground control.

QuoteOn 15 December 1989, KLM Flight 867 en route to Narita International Airport, Tokyo from Amsterdam was descending into Anchorage International Airport when the Boeing 747-400, less than 6 months old[1], flew through a thick cloud of volcanic ash from Mount Redoubt.[2] All four engines failed leaving only critical systems on backup electrical power

I am far from ignorant of the dangers of the dust and was not suggesting at all that it is harmless dust. I work in aviation and am fully aware of the dangers of volcanic dust/ash and was in fact involved in the operations side of things in this mornings first wave of cancellations in the UK.

My point was/is that it's quite amazing to see such widespread disruption due to what ultimately is... dust!

Good luck getting to Brussels, I am supposed to fly tomorrow but suspect that might not happen! But better to be safe than sorry!  ;D

I have a friend who is up on the Shetland Isles (They're NE of Scotland for those don't know :)) and he says the air now smells of eggs there.  I'm in Manchester and I'm wondering if the clouds are looking a little yellow.  Has anyone else seen anything unusual?

Not as of yet but I'm near Hereford, it'll be a few days before I see anything if at all. Although I have seen reports of the egg smell as far south as Aberdeen.

Hopefully sunsets might be a bit more impressive with some new colours.

And a query, where has the OP got that ATC map from?

Oh dear! People like that man shouldn't be allowed to fly anyway  :P what an embarrassment to the British nation to have him being watched World-wide!  :-[

NATS have just announced that UK airspace will remain closed until 1900 (UK Local) on Friday and will update at 0830 for plans to 0100 on Saturday. Some flights may be allowed between N.Ireland and Glasgow.

So in short, another day of grounded flights in the UK at least.

Currently the restrictions are only in place until 0700 tomorrow, not Sunday.

http://www.nats.co.uk/

That of course doesn't mean that it wont be extended as it has been several times now...

Flybe have announced that they will operate flights from Manchester (north bound only), Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen from 1300 as long as restrictions are not extended to include Scotland and Northern Ireland again. They're also offering a shuttle service between Belfast and Glasgow from 1900 this evening.

So it looks like things are starting to get moving again which is a good sign :)

I live in Iceland and we're finding the situation... Interesting. Amusing, perhaps. It's not often that something that happens here has a major effect on the world.

Ironically, Keflavik (the main International airport of Iceland), is still open and flights to and from the Americas are still flying as usual.

With my geography student hat on I can say that Eyjafjallajökull, the cause of this erupted on a continuous basis at varying strengths between 1821 - 1823. So maybe it's three years time.

But I hope not.

Yeah I heard/read that somewhere. I really hope it doesn't keep going for 3 years!!

The worse thing about it is that some insurance companies will not pay out because it's an "act of god".

I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens, A few people our family knows haven't been able to fly out to a few different places.

Actually the Atlantic hurricane/depressions rate cycle every 20 years, in the 80s there were avg 15-20 depressions a year, in the 90s 10 a year, in the 00's 15-20, we're probably going into another low number year (last two years have been low).

That being said, I've lived here 80% of my life, I've been in about 10 storms, (Half of them when I lived in Palm Beach between 2002-2006) and for the most part, other than not having electric for a few days, they're non-events. Just pray a tree doesn't fall on anything, stock up on food & water, tie anything down that can fly  and you'll be fine.

Anyhoo, Hurricane season starts in June, with September being the peak part of the year.

wow delegates of the world can't even attend the Polish President/First Lady & parlaiment's funeral because of the stupid ash. If it was me, I would fly as far as I could then just descend below the ash and fly there the rest of the way. Yes I felt a bit sick about it... but I do understand it has been done for safety reasons... and I get my euro's back from BMI so no trouble with that either.

In Germany, there are already a number of a/c in the air, at least reallocating. Lufthansa announced, they would start long-haul flights tonight as well. However, there were those reports about a NATO-F-16 facing trouble in the clouds somewhere over Europe and reports from Suisse air measurements that also turned out negative.
