Title: How many kids and teenagers are playing?
Post by: Frogiton on August 18, 2009, 02:03:58 PM
Hi everyone, I'm 14, I was just wondering how many kids or teenagers are playing? I know some kids are playing and I think that it's cool. I mean this is ten times better than most video games, it's also, I think, more interactive and dare I say (why did I just say that?)... educational. 8)

This game has tought me a lot about building strategies, some basics about airline economics and some key issues in running a fleet of aircraft which i also see in real life at my local flying club (i.e commonality, age, costs).

I'm 12, turning 13 on 21st August.  ;) (I'm the youngest so far...that I know of...)

I'm not really into the "educational websites" such as "Mathletics", (which was Australian, but now expanded all over the world) and that's all l I can think of.
AirwaySim however, is a FUN educational game. I learn what the best ways are for running a business.
I repeat: FUN

When I was that age we didn't even have a computer at home, in good old Arkangelsk.
I learned how to dismantle AK-47's and how not to freeze to dead when you got stuck outside in the middle of the arctic winter.

I'm SO jealous at you spoiled kids :D

Wow more kids than I thought :o. Some of you guys are doing way better than me... We should have a world for people under 20 years old only. That would be fun. Oh and Dasha, I know how to take apart my school loaned laptop :P. But into all seriousness, I'm pretty glad I was born in this generation.

Um...excuse me?? Gen Z is awesome!! I'm the only one that classifys for Gen Z - 1996 - 2010   Well not the only one, the only one so far...
Sorry to other's born in 1995 - you're just plain ol' Gen Y

I think they "made" Gen Z for children born/grew up with advanced digital technology (internet, social networking, (AirwaySim  ;)), mobile phones etc.) Correct me if I'm wrong.

I feel "special" in a "good" way about being in Gen Z for some completely unknown reason. (That is a quote I received from a teacher of mine "...You're just...eh..."special" in a...eh..."good way") That damn ol' teacher!

But I do have to say that when the other Generations were children, they were in a much larger state of health than the children of today. Better off, in a way.

Hey.  Not to get too political here .... but weren't the Finns learning to reassemble their AK's to defend against the Soviet guys?  Wow things have changed in the last 20 years.  I worked with several former Soviet block people and I must say they were great.

Also, wasn't Arkangelsk (sorry sp.) a high tech city in the USSR?  You still didn't have computers?

BTW, I think it's great kids are playing but I'm not so excited about them kicking the crap out of me in this game.  My generation seems to be learning the virtue of humility a little too often lately.

It WAS a rather important city in the USSR do to it's geographical position. Murmansk had the naval harbor and unlike the USA, Russia did spread out their fleet. Arkangelsk was the fourth naval harbor, after Murmansk, Vladivostok and Simferopol.

There was a lot of technical stuff around and the city has got one of the four Technical Universities of Russia. So yes hightech I think. And my parents weren't very poor so we did have a computer. Just nothing to put on the computer.

Windows was hard to get by and internet wasn't connected to our house.

But after reading this topic and being 20 y/o I feel like an elderly now.

I have a bit of questions.

When the USSR was still a state, wasn't information about military things hidden and secret; I mean, did you know about where the fleet was based even at the times?
Also, was the computer you had russian?
And, wouldn't windows be banned since it was American when russia was still USSR?
Also, you said that your family was not poor, but aren't people under communism like the one in the USSR have all the same amount of money?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Well, I'm not from Russia, but Slovakia (as part of Czechoslovakia) had "communism" (see note below) until 1989 and as far as I know (I'm born in 93) it's definetly not true ;) It's absolutely contrary. There are usually very rich and very poor people. Nothing between.

NOTE:
There WASN'T and ISN'T any country which had/have communism. Communism is political theory which isn't particulary bad, but it's unreal. That thing was socialism which was presented as "step before communism" (but I don't believe that polticians wanted communism, it wouldn't be good for them)... At least here they didn't want. But probably also in USSR since we were "very good friends" with Russians, heroes which came and save us before that bad bad capitalism :))..

AirwaySim    :)                               ~8-12€

surplus 10-15€, thats what I can put back for my drivers license, so....I should first stop smoking :), and pump my parents for more pocket money ;), to expand playing AirwaySim, because I cannot take part in that many games due to my finance :( :( :( :(

Please don't any of you ever start smoking. It does not make you look cool. As for health consequences, please find out about a disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. You basically choke to death after suffering for years and the disease is very strongly linked to smoking. I've seen some of these patients and it ain't pretty. End of health rant, please return to your imaginary airlines.

As for young people playing for these games, I must say I'm really impressed. If my stepson wanted to play I would buy him 100 credits at once. Unfortunately he only likes pointless and stupid games.  :P

I am a bit concirned because I have to go to India in October for a holiday with Dad and one of the cities I will visit is Mumbai. I recently though saw a documentary on National Geographic that Mumbai has so much pollution that being there and breathing it's air for 1 day is like smoking  :o 20  :o cigarettes!!!

I have quite high expenses as well, but when there are airwaysim games, I cut back on candy, snacks and chocolate which account for 40% of my spendings!

Fortunately i can't have more than one game running at a time (i've got my hands full with ATB2) so the expenses are very low for airwaysim. Thankfully, because one of my primary expenses is flight hours and it's pretty much impossible to cut back on those (worse than smoking  ;D )

I went to a Summer camp in Germany this summer in Salem, southern Germany. I was an absolute beginner but after 40hrs, now I can speak and write a bit. Next year, I will aslo take german lessons at school; as german is an important language! So, after I can speak german, I will know: Italian, English, French, Spanish and German. I'm trying to learn all the major European languages ;D

So, what's your favourite Italian dish then?

About that I must say, that it is an own invention. pollo in vino rosso e *vegetables* mediterraneo (don't know whether it is right :-[, 3yrs passed since my last vacation in bella italia :'(), but it's chicken breast fillet in mediterreanian vegetables, with vino nobile di montepulciano (D.O.C only ;D) about 200ml (the rest either for drinking while having dinner, or drinking while cooking ;D ;D)

Viel Spaß beim Deutsch lernen!  ;) ;)

You're totally right... people in Austria say they would speak german but they DON'T, and they probably will NEVER do.
what they speak is what I call 'austrian'('Österreichisch'), the swiss people don't arrogate to speak german they call it 'schwitzerdütsch', what is okay in my eyes. but the austrians mainly say "we speak german", but they don't.... the same is for people from Bavaria (Bayern) and Baden-Wuerttemberg (Baden - Württemberg), and in parts for people from Saxony (Sachsen), wich is not real german...
see, I come from Duisburg, near Düsseldorf [EDDM|DUS], where you speak one of the 'best' and purest german :).

thank you for you attention ;D

About that I must say, that it is an own invention. pollo in vino rosso e *vegetables* mediterraneo (don't know whether it is right :-[, 3yrs passed since my last vacation in bella italia :'(), but it's chicken breast fillet in mediterreanian vegetables, with vino nobile di montepulciano (D.O.C only ;D) about 200ml

Vegetables in italian = verdure
the spellng was almost correct: pollo in vino rosso e verdure mediterranee ("e" instaed of "a" as it's plural  ;) )

The recepie sounds very very good, it's similar to "brasato" which is the same exact thing as you said but with beef fillet instead of chicken. You might become a famous chef :)

Ich weiß nicht wie die deutsche Grammatik, sondern Sprache ist sehr schön!
nearly correct as well... ;) ;)

Ich weiß nicht wie die deutsche Grammatik funktionert, sondern die Sprache ist sehr schön!

the "funktioniert" is needed in order that this is the main sentence, and it has to have Subject Verb Object, and "funktioniert" ist the missing Verb. and in the second part there needs to be, different to many (in this case also not) english Nouns you need to put a preposition in front of it. Also, what I see you learned is that in german there are three different types of prepositions, due to the three genders:
"das" for neutrum
"der" for maskulinum
"die" for femininum,
but that is similar in italian right??

Okay so far for german grammar...

but I think you speak a much better german, than my italian is ;), but you went to summer camp here, and I did only have vacancies with my mother (*barf*[related to holiday with parents at all]) in italy( :D :D)...

by the way, it isn't that far from Salem at the Bodensee to München(200-400km), wich you might have visited?? if not you have to!!!!!
munich is the (in my opinion) nicest, prettiest and most awesome city in whole germany!!! (even though people there don't speak german(see post above))

so:

arrividerci, e buena notte!
(have to go now, because I have to get up at 5.45AM tomorrow for school, like each morning)

Hey guys. I'm in my teens, but I'm not going to say where exactly. (security reasons) I live in Toronto Canada, and (thank god) I don't smoke it's also expensive here too. My uncle smokes and he says (and I see it at gas stations too) that they are about $10-15 CAD per pack (about 6.40-9.60 euros). wow. it's even more expensive there! anywho, I'm going to study german in a couple years once this french crap i HAVE to take is over. I mean yeah,it's nice to be semi-bilingual right now, but still. BORING! I'm even studying right now at home with a "learn german" book. I'm ASLO studying russian when I'm in my aunt's car, because she's heading to moscow in september. I also know tiny bits of polish because my grandmother was born there. So, in total I semi-know 4 languages and ace in english, as I was born in Canada. Oh! i also know very little Italian too. My friend's dad is italian and they go to italy (FIRST CLASS :'( ) every year, and I had to help my friend practice it. So that's 5 semi-know languages and 1 aced language. let's see if i can cough up some simple sentences in some of the languages i semi-know.

German-Es macht mir nicht aus! ;D

Russian (don't know how to write it, so i'll just google translate it so you know what the heck i'm saying)-Привет! как дела?

Polish-porze nocnej jest miły.

Italian-Che fortuna che ho oggi! Vorrei provare la lotteria! (but today for me it's the opposite!)

tip Jona: when saying something like "that's whole area's an elite boarding school" remember that when there are two vowels after each other like what i said, it's "an elite" but when, like you said, "an whole" there's no need for the "n" after "a"

ok. I have to go now. Ich nehme den Zug (to Hamilton).

This is so sad! I'm Italian and I know NOTHING of the language... well I exaggerate, but I do know VERY BASIC Italian. And with my Greek...pfft, forget about it, I only know/remember "May I please have some water" and "Milk".

I have to say that the education system in Australia are great. In Australian Capital Territory (A state/territory - It's the home of Canberra...the capital city - sorry, I just know that a lot of foreigners have absolute no idea what the capital of Australia is ahaha), as I was saying. My school only have Japanese and French as language subjects, and are not vital...until next year. I HAVE to learn a language, but I hope it is a variety. I want to learn Italian, but that is only in Private schools at the moment, the public schools have Japanese,
French and Indonesian and Spanish. (Most anyway). You are probably thinking that if I grew up in a European family...why don't I know any of them? Well my mum is Greek and my dad is Italian...you do the math. They never spoke their own languages to eachother let alone to us/me.

Although I dont know any other language than English, I do teach English voluntarily to other students in my school who have English as a second language. It's pretty cool, but annoying in some ways.

Oh god, I just learnt about that process today...although I never really needed to as I always type "full sentences", but it was good to know that that formula was needed to make a full sentence.

(Oh and ciggarettes in Australia cost about $15 - $25AUD for a pack of...24?? That is about 8 - 14EUR)

Thanks Jona for the german lesson! I copy pasted your message and saved it on my computer in case I need it in the future 8)

I went to Munchen, and to my opinion too it is the best city in germany!  The october fest really builds up their "palana spoiler"!  But it's very nice during the october fest as everybody is so happy that you rarely see people which are happyer!

Your last sentence saying good night, was almost correct: buona notte

To Icecold:
Knowing lots of semi languages is also useful. You can speak a bit all around the world. I know "taxi" in every language of the world! About the lottery, they recently won 147 million Euros in the Italian lotterly :o :o,

To Dorito_25
Japanese! they all learn english, so what's the point of that? Italian too is not incredibly useful, but I think you should learn it since it's one of your mother languages. Spanish instead is more useful, but Italian is a very nice language, and it might be useful as once you know Italian, all the other latin languages come in a clic! So, you have 3 passports, Italian, greek and Australian?

Nice, to teach english to other students - is it a sort of language exchange? Must be interesting!

Have to go now - I'm on holiday and I have to take a Sight seeing bus!

Bye

Of course, they speak German! Same as Austrians speak German. Maybe it's not grammatically correct, but still, it's German. It's same like here in Slovakia - some (especially old) people on Eastern Slovakia speak quite different and most people (especially like me - from Western Slovakia) sometimes don't understand them, but still, they speak Slovak. It's called slang/dialect :)

About Munich - I never was there, but definitely, once I want to see it (it could be cheaper with Sommerticket in Austria, if you know about it :) I can do it from Bratislava as one-day trip by train)! I was in Cologne and Berlin and those are nice cities :) My only problem is that (sorry about that) I NEVER found one restaurant in Germany with good food... if you know about some, let me know :)

So, Cologne is fairly nice (my mother comes from there), but as I live closer to Düsseldorf, I like it more (there is a never ending rivalry between the cities), Berlin is okay, but very dirty... I don't mind because duisburg has two mayor steel mills (Thyssen Krupp Steel,TKS; and Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann,HKM;) and it is much dirtier here :(...

about your restaurant finding problems:

where did you look for a restaurant???
In cologne/Köln there are restaurants as hell... and some bad I must admit, but very many great ones!!!!
In berlin it is a little more complicated, because very good restaurants are often very expensive :(

See you in München one day?!...
sorry I should explain xD
my brother lives there for half a week, with look on the Isar (not meaning the I.S.A.R.(International Sea and Air Rescue ;D), and another half in a hotel in Hamburg flying three to 4 times a week :D, and some times I visit him, of course using the plane 8).

by the way from wich time are your summer holidays, and how long do they last??
mine were six weeks long, but ended last monday :'( :'(...

Well, in Berlin I checked many places, but I can't find anything (I was willing to pay more, and I paid more, but I wasn't very satisfied - maybe because I eat lot in Austria and it's much better :)) and in Cologne I tried only once (I was there only for about 8 hours between EuroNight arrival from Vienna and Thalys departure to Paris) :)

In Slovakia, summer holidays are same for every high school in country - from 1st July to 31st August. But 1st September is national holiday (Constitution day) so school starts at 2nd September. If 2nd September is Friday, it starts at 5th September :)

Well, one day I definitely come to Munchen. Question is when and how, maybe I'll buy some flight with Austrian, best airline in German speaking country - apart of Germany (reference to bruno and Lufthansa ;))... and get first miles to Miles & More. I registered 3 months ago and still don't have any mile :D

school holidays here in Canada are from June 27th to about September 7th (this year in particular). I'm working only in August, but when I'm finished I'm getting a laptop for School and for a couple years. I'm looking at a dell inspiron mini for now, but i'll be upgrading to a Sony Vaio mini next year, hopefully. You europeans always are so lucky when it comes to cheap flight tickets. we only get sh**ty Air Canada that gives you 15% off only when you book within a 4-minute period!   Lucky you!

well, see the difference: Austria has got less the one tenth of germany's population, and only a fourth of it's size, thus....

also the Deutsch Bahn is quite expensive; my motto for travelling DB is:

DB, always late, pay high, service low   ;D   xD

Also some writers produced a book called:

"sänk ju vor trävelling" ;D ;D ;D, wich means the way thank you for travelling is pronounced in extremly bad english by most of the conductors..... ::) ::)
very funny, they also complain about the always late trains with bad service, and overpriced tickets/food if you're good enough in german I recommend it to you!!

by the way: an easy way for learning other languages is (if you're a fan)e.g. Asterix(or other comics or easy to understand lecture ;) ;)
good luck at that

Don't worry, I don't drink beer, I don't even like it that much! Though, sometimes I have a tiny sip of wine or beer as people say that it's not bad when you are 13 to have a little to get the liver used to it so you don't get drunk easily when your older.

I was there in October as I have a week holiday in October and as I wanted to see how it was. I ate lots of bretzels though  ;D

I actually don't own a valid passport, mine expired YEARS ago. The thing about my family is that I rarely travel internationally (actually, i have never been out of Australia. The closest thing I have been is flying over the Arafura Sea, then turning around to go to the Darwin Airport  ), where as in Europe, you take a 30 minute flight and you have passed three countries!   I believe you can have an Italian passport, but that is valid for all of Europe. I think it's the same for if you had a passport from a European country, you can use it all over Europe?? I know I am able to get a Greek or Italian passport as my dad was born in Italy and my mum's parents were born in Greece.

A week ago when I turned 13, my mum told me the story about the Italian families that get their son to drink wine so that they don't become alcoholics when they are older. It "prepares" the liver. Isn't that interesting?

Just this second I heard about a mid-air drama...I think it was about the man wanting to open the doors of the Qantas Flight. I think he has a mental illness because apparantly he doesn't recall holding the door-handle. I would be so scared if someone just got up and walked around for a bit, then tried to open the door. So stange. Anyway, I need to go to school now, you enjoy your holidays

In the EU (shengen) , when travelling across any border by air, you have to show a passport or ID card. By car, technically you should identify yourself with a document... but usually they just look at you and what you have in your car.

I don't know about other countries, but my passport is valid for travelling all over the world :) But if you are citizen of EU, you have some advantages in other EU countries. Useful thing is also that in case of problem aboard in country where your country don't have consulate, you can use consulate of any other country. For example, we don't have consulate in Tunisia, but if I get into troubles there, Czech Republic consulate should help me too.

Also, there is a Schengen Agreement which is signed by most of EU countries (not every country) + Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. While travelling only in Schengen Area you don't need present any ID on border. However, you must carry some ID (passport or ID card preferably) since there might be random check on border and of course, police can ask you for ID also in country.

I hope you don't hate me for not referring to everybody while answering.....

So the alcohol thing:
In germany you can drink alcohol from 16+, but only alcohol under 10 or 12.5% vol., for more things like Vodka, Grappa or Ramazotti/Averna , or what I prefer: Gin-Tonic; you need to be 18 or more, that also goes for cigarettes...

well everybody drinks alcohol a little earlier, except for idiots, or pussies ;D ;D!
Also, in germany the most people at the stores aren't interested in you age, if don't look like beeing 5 or so ;) ;).

The train thing: I did really never travel by train in slovakia, as I have naver been further on than the austrian-german border :-\
(I have been further east so far, but not in that area ;)), but the German train experience is enough to know what bad service is.

what you like more??
White wine
Red Wine
Beer
Vodka
others (please name)

About the Passport thing:

in the European Union (Union European; Europäisch Union; EU) you do only need your useal Personal-Identification-Card (PIDC; Peronalausweis); to travel arround, it is weightend equally to the passport. to travel to non-EU countries you often also do not need it, but in fact for that you need an passport, to travel to the US you have to have a biometric-machine-radable-Passport(expensive),
a passport from the EU/any other country in the world is valid everywhere in the world!!! the only restriction is for some countries not wanting special nationalities enter there country, e.g. as an Iraqui it is very difficult to enter the US (if not impossible), and the USA request the special passport, all others are free.

also, nice thing with alitalia (mine only make sense in geman, but I'll transalte ;) ;)):
Mazda:     Opel(2x):     FIAT:    AEG(2x):     Simens:

Mazda: My car is driven by the towing services.
Opel (1st one): Without a plan just started building.

FIAT: Mistakes in all parts.
AEG (1st one): pack out - switch on - won't work!

You cannot open the plane doors while flying over 1500 metres!!
the pressure in the cabin is higher than outside (kept at average pressure of 100m), and after this has time ago happened, they constructed the doors in another way:

you have to pull it to the inside of the plane, before opening it, and that is not possible, because even 0,1bar (don't know hom much in pascal/psi :-[, but very few!!!) is enough to close the plane door permanently till equation of the air pressure of the plane ;) ;)

OK, I'm idiot :D Also here, they sell alcohol to anyone, but I would never break a law in this. So, since October, I'm going drink to Austria where it's legal. Next village is actually in Austria and there is bus every hour for 75 cents :D

Quote from: Jona L. on August 28, 2009, 01:38:51 PM
but the German train experience is enough to know what bad service is.
Well, this morning I used german train (EC Jan Jesenius from Budapest to Hamburg) between Bratislava and Brno (Moravia) and that was terrible - you don't have power sockets in trains??? To be honest we also don't have in 2nd class, but now in new carriages they are installed. And in Austria they are in every long-distance train!

in the European Union (Union European; Europäisch Union; EU) you do only need your useal Personal-Identification-Card (PIDC; Peronalausweis); to travel arround, it is weightend equally to the passport. to travel to non-EU countries you often also do not need it, but in fact for that you need an passport, to travel to the US you have to have a biometric-machine-radable-Passport(expensive),
For EU travelling you need ID card, outside EU passport. You can travel to US with STANDARD PASSPORT, but need visa. If you have biometric passport, you can travel just with ESTA (applicable for SELECTED COUNTRIES ONLY). In Slovakia you can have only biometric passport which cost 33 EUR - I think (more if you want it faster - for 33 EUR you get it in 30 days, however, my was made in one weekend since there wasn't many orders that time.. Here, when your passport is ready to pickup you'll get SMS information).

not entirely true. SAA 192 opened their doors in flight @ 29000ft, and it still worked. the doors have been constructed the same way since the 50s/60s, so they had the same doors as aircraft now.

about Alitalia:
THEY ARE A LOAD OF SH**! I flew them ONCE, and they bickered about every little thing, THE ENTIRE WAY THERE AND BACK! Large things such as how high we were flying was bit**ed about, even small things like WHEN TO SERVE THE GOD DAMN 1/2-of-the-bottle POP!!! I hated Alitalia, yet my friend still flies with them. I should get new people... ;D

also, here in law-ridden Canada, you can't even have a bottle of wine in your car, open or closed; it has to be in your trunk. Also, 19 is the minimum drinking age, along with smoking. how expensive is it for insurance in the EU guys? I had a quote on a BMW 328i (brand new from my grandparents) for $14,000 A YEAR! NO JOKE. even a sh**ty 1823 chevy lumina had a $7500 a year quote! jesus christ Canada, get a grip! (although I understand why they do it: teens that finally have their license tend to speed, make illegal left turns, drive very dangerously and even drag race on major highways and roads! stupid teens ;D)

I travelled 3 times with Aliatalia and please save me!

The first time, was a flight from Milan to Tokyo. Apart from the 2hrs delay because the plane apparently was missing all of it's crew, the rest was fine considered it was Alitalia. There were many Italian cabin attendants and 1 japanese one. Well, the Italian cabin attendants sat and chatted for all the fligh in business class (12 hrs, not joking) whilst the japanese cabin attendant did everything for all the 300 passengers on board! :o

On the return flight, there were no meals available so we ate aliatlia's famous brick-biscuits and various other snacks, chatting along with the crew which showed no intention of working.

The second flight was from Milan to Copenhagen and the cabin attendants asked us what we wanted to drink using rude slang language :-\

And the last was a couple of days ago which was a Milan - Rome - Malta which, apart from a 1 hour delay at Rome and an unadvised gate change in Milan, was fine.

I Love Lufthansa

lufthansa, BA and lufthansa italia rock (i've never flown them but my friend who came back yesterday wanted to take them while going to Athens. BA from YYZ to LHR, LHR to FCO on Lufthansa Italia and Olympic to ATH. then in reverse starting wednesday. He liked them A LOT, mostly because he flew Lufthansa FIRST CLASS before, but never Y and wondered what their Y class was like.
Title: Re: How many kids and teenagers are playing?
Post by: Jona L. on August 28, 2009, 05:02:18 PM
well.... I can say the Lufthansa Y class is like the minimum of all Star Alliance planes, and I speak from knowledge on my own legs/knees... thankfully I wanted the seat at the inner side, and not at the window... well you should know for that, that I'm nearly 2m tall........
that's pretty a lot!

but still I like them best, due to them beeing the best airline in germany!
I also like BA/KLM/AF/(Air Berlin in parts, because the service is not that good)/Air Malta (because even in economy they have very good seats!! I would count them to premium (if not luxury) Y seats in AS, and the service was fine)....

thanks to all airlines providing the services to/from DUS|CGN|FRA|MUC, the for me most important airports in germany, followed by CDG/LHR/ARN/FCO/ATH/MLA and DBVin europe... and intercontinental is what I won't start about!

Rain is great until.. you are sitting on airport and looking for longer and longer delay for your flight.. That's one of things why I prefer trains on short routes.
Title: Re: How many kids and teenagers are playing?
Post by: Jona L. on August 28, 2009, 09:19:01 PM
okay... thats one of the only problems about rain... but mostly i don't think that it is the reason for the delay, but you can much easier say its the rains' fault, than to admit, that your pilot is drunk, and couldn't find the right plane, so he now flys another plane to JFK instead of flying your plane to ATL ;D ;D ;D

Too be honest, I'm glad this is off topic now. This is what we wanted: A general forum for "whatever" talk.

The only other airlines I have flown with is probably Virgin Blue, and Jetstar. Most people groan and moan when they talk about Jetstar, but I don't mind it. There hasn't been one flight that I was really un-happy on...uh except the roaring engines on one of the 4 hour flights  :'( I didnt have any sleep from 8 pm when it left to 10.30 pm when it arrived (Time difference - still 4 hr flight).
With Virgin blue though...they're a different story. Their cabin crew were disgusting and un-proffesional! My brother is disabled and he can't walk or talk, but we can take him on flights. Normally on Qantas they are treating him like he's the king, and they make us relax. Where as with Virgin, WE were told to grab their wheel chair, transfer it, then take him to the gate, and put us on board. NO help! Then on the flight we asked to have a harness so that he could be more comfortable. One of them said that they don't have harnesses (when they do, I saw it in the over-head carriage), so then we asked for pillows (on the beginning of the flight) they said that we shouldn't get other people's share of pillows so we werent allowed any. Instead we were given one blanket. I took my jumper off so that my disabled brother could have some support, and my other brother took his off too, we were cold, and we shared the one blanket...un-believeable right??

I'm sorry for you brother... honestly!

and this is relly insolent, of the the airline, that's where I am (and I think all others here are) on your side ;) ;)!!
good luck choosing the next flight!

going to bed now, nearly 2AM *yawn* ;D
too bad... it's not rainnig outside, but luckily not inside ;D
good night *smothering another yawn*

I really feel sorry for you, having to deal with that. If I was you, I would stand up to them and say "Listen, my BROTHER is disabled, and if you want me to fly again with you, which I do fly often, I suggest you help us, or i'm contacting Virgin Blue's customer relations and telling THEM that you treated a disabled person with no respect what so ever. Now unless your doing something, I don't want to see you or any other Flight Attendant for the rest of the flight." If they do anything, which most likely they WILL help you, tell your brother after that it was neccessary, even though you lied about flying frequently. It works, trust me! ;)

Thanks everyone for your support, but it is very un-likely I will be flying on Virgin Blue again anyway. My dad often pays for flights with credit card, which is also part of Qantas - therefore he gets points for the payment. We did complain that morning -it was 12 am when we had arrived. My mum went absolutely off yelling at the customer service -  she was loud! I don't remember what she said they said, but I'm pretty sure they said something about that it wasn't a requirement for the airline to "look" after us. When I flew Qantas last, it was July and I was going from Brisbane - Canberra. We are always are at the check-in counter for a while - that's a given but they had someone take us from the check-in to the security then to gate. We were asked to wait until 10 minutes before actual time for us to board and then someone came to take us on board. We basically did nothing! That's how it should be with every airline, but for some reason, it happened with Virgin Blue.
But I'm pretty sure my family aren't the only ones that have experienced something like that with a airline. That's why we have favourites.  ;)

Off the streets! Well I can't talk much about anything coming off the streets in Australia...most bad things you can think of.

This is off topic now...well more off topic than it already was:
You would never believe what had just happened to me (well it happened about an hour or so ago). I was in JA#3 looking at used aircraft. I saw a Boeing 747-200 there. I went for it straight away as all I could do in Sydney now was international flights then small pax turbo-prop flights. I looked at the stats...actually no i didn't i pressed the Lease button straight away (BAD THING TO DO!)...but I was just so excited! I was deciding a configuration out of the three that I had (410HD-Y, 24S-C, 5S-F or 320S-Y, 24S-C, 10S-F or another one, but not much profit out of that one). I looked at some Asia flights and saw that Bangkok was full, Hong Kong was full, Singapore was already done by me with spots left for the second choice of configuration. I was thinking "What they hey" and went back to the aircraft page tab and clicked comfirm order...but there was no such thing as the plane I wanted because I took too long to find if I needed it - so someone else got it instead. So now I need to wait until 1973 (game time)to get all my aircraft to me! There will be some more orders in future...but I have to keep my eye on the used aircraft list because those routes get done quickly. I desperately want to do a Singapore-Londone route. There are so much demand!! I probably won't even do a fuel stop on this one!  Well there are lessons that need to be learnt in this game.

I never go for the big airports. I always base in smaller ones that have really good demand that people over look.

I tried that strategy too, but after some time the demand was "full", so I could not have any new routes :(...

well, now I favorize medium to significant Airports if I'm not choosing MUC or JFK ;D
but I think it's also up to the planes you use! I like planes 100pax+, I only sometimes change my mind
everybody got to find his/her own strategy!

I do like medium sized airports too.  LIke CHicago MIdway for example... i can make routes that arent even flowing out of there in real life... cause i live in the Chicago area.  ;D

To continue about the airline disadventure...

I came back from my last summer holiday for this year (  :'( ) with an Alitalia flight Malta - Rome - Milan.

Well, we had scheduled a 1 hour stop in Rome. The plane at Malta departed 1hr 20 mins late, so we got to Rome 1hr 20 mins late; therefore missing our onward connection to Milan. We then learnt that the flight that we were supposed to take to Milan was cancelled, but they said it wasn't a problem as Rome - Milan is a frequently travelled corridor with a plane every 30 mins; so they scheduled us on another plane. When that plane arrived, it was full of the passengers that had booked that flight, so there was no space on board for us or the other passengers of the flight we were supposed to take (the one that was cancelled). Everybody started to get nurvous, and we all started shouting against the first person insight wearing an Alitalia uniform. They then told us that the only plane that was available to ferry us to Milan was a B777. We then waited other 2 hrs at rome waiting for this famous 777 (in the meanwhile we were all shouting as usual against Aliatlia employees). The 777 finally arrived, we boarded, we took off. But, it was not over yet!

We were originally scheduled to arrive in Milan Linate airport, Milan's domestic airport which has a short runway. In the middle of the flight, the captain announced that since the B777 was too big for Linate, we were heading to Malpensa, which is Milan's international airport 47KM away from the city. The passengers abourd the plane (and me too) were furious! People started as usual screaming, shouting, elbowing, gauging, insulting and all you would expect from a late summer fight. At the end, we all asked for the money back, but Alitalia refused since when we were arguing on the plane we did not listen to their instructions to keep calm, so we broke the aviation laws bla bla bla.

I am now finally home! And alive!! I wanted to kiss the ground when I got off the plane, but the tarmac was full of gums and other rubish so I avoided.

;D ;D

that's why they clean the space the pope is expected to kiss the ground

;D ;D

why didn't you fly directly to malta???
I've been there this year too  , and there are flts from all major german airports (such as MUC|FRA|DUS|CGN|TXL|HAM|(seasonally even DTM), so I don't see the point, why there shouldn't be a flt from Linate to Luqa!!

well, on this way you could sit in a 777, wich I couldn't do so far :( :(
the biggest I ever sat in was a 330-200...  :-[
serviced by LTU (sorry Air Berlin by the time ::))... from DUS to LIS and only hmmm?? 10% booked :D :D? thus every passenger had a full row (A-F seat) form him/her all alone!! was quite nice! but the flight back was a torture an quite old extremly loud Avro RJ 85, last row, additionally sound from the 5th engine in the rear, which they remembered switching off for the landing ::) in DUS, 2h30 late :o, and having an crazy wannabe cowboy sitting next to me, chewing his vapid, (ughs! *vomit*) instead of eating the dinner provided (an eve warm lasagne!!), wich didn't taste that good, but was eatable.... :)

so that's why I dislike former LTU!!

sry, that I can only read with half an eye, I'm doing HW (arround 10pages in typegrade 12 MS office), because I didn't want to loose all other hours of the weekend :D :D, but that's life, arround 12PM i should be ready! 8)

Ok never flying Altalia when I go to Europe... If I ever go.

Idk if I'll go to europe... I like central america a lot.... Specifically Nicaragua.

Fillipino, a group that went to Nicaragua onte trip had an experience like that coming back.

They were flying American from Managua - Miami - Chicago O'Hare. I flew a different route... on Delta... But that's a different story.

Anyway, they got to Miami and through customs alright. but then th flight to O hare wa delayed because of weather in Miami. Their delay grew from 1 hour to 5 hours... And then the flight was canceled... Not only because of the weAther, but because the PRESIDENT was visiting Chicago. So They shut down o'hare.

They got home to Chicago at 2am the next day. They said it was soo horrible.

Alitalia isn't as bad as it seems. It's just that it cannot be a consistent airline. You sometimes have wonderful flight experiences on board, and sometimes terrible adventures. I don't know if i've gotten used to the type of service, but AZ is still the carrier i prefer when i have to go anywhere (except when the prices are higher than the competition) and i can say i'm satisfied. Maybe I have a different conception of air travel. Sure, it's not SIA but it's not even as terrible as it may seem. The seats especially i find very comfortable, and it's one of the things i look most at. Probably it's because i've seen myself how chaotic the airport environment can be with: slots, delays, handling problems, flight plans losing validity after 30 minutes, traffic, and weather during my pilot training, so i don't get angry anymore when a delay is announced because i understand the issue. I have many stories to tell on the problem  :) . My all time favorite though remains Continental

Central and South America are wonderful, i really would like to visit some places there, especially Costa Rica.

I advise you, what is about to come is one of my first memories as a less than a meter tall boy, and a sad monologue :'(

I remember, that before September 11, Alitalia was a fantastic airline, in perfect shape. I used to fly a lot on it when I was around 3 as my parents and me lived in New york, so we travelled often to Italy to see friends etc.
At the time, everything was new, the planes were the jewels of the time, the interiors were incredible, the service was an example of true hospitality. I remember that on a flight, I still have the ticket from the day in one of my drawers, the date shows 27 July 1999, and the flight was departing JFK bound for Rome at 8:25pm. During the flight, I was given a plastic toy model of a 747. That 747 is one of the toys I remember the most from my childhood, I remember I brought it everywhere, and today it is still with me, there, on my shelf where I keep all of the toy planes. It is lying there, but, the shiny white plastic turned yellow, and the wings are full of dust. That toy resembles Alitalia to my opinion, A magnificent airline, where unfortunately the wrong things appeared, turning it yellow and dusty. In these moments I am picking it up, and I notice that if I clean it, it turns back to it's original splendour; the white goes back to being shiny, the dust disappear, and the engines turn back on. That is what could happen with the true Alitalia, but unfortunately, years of bad decisions, made by people who couldn't care less, or if they cared, nobody would listen to them. This brought the dust on the company. Which should clean itself, as I claned my 747, to bring it back to it's original greatness. Alitalia really needs that severe clean, to get rid of all those old planes, old interiors, delays, scheduling problems, flight cancelles, unwilling crew and all the rest, because, it breaks your heart to see something that could be so nice, which instead is in a state of pity. I know I've critisised AZ, but what can I doo about it? All that I can doo, is hope for a better future, and, mostly, I can continue to polish my 747, which, even if all dusty and yellow, still sitz there with it's nose pointed to the sky, looking for better skies ahead, the same skies as the ones of the good old days.

I got in 2006 when I was 12. I saw the FA passing them out to young kids when I said to my self, "I have to have it!" lol. So I told my mom to ask for one and the FA gave her one.

I can never blow it up all the way though. It's pretty realistic. It has an Austrian flag, an EU flag, and a reg. Number.

Filippo:
Wow..I have to say that that seems like the worst plane experience for the average passenger. The ONLY delays I have experienced were because of the ice on the wings of the aircraft at 7 am in the middle of winter in Sydney. (Sydney have the curfew, so planes were just sitting there in the freezing cold conditions for over 7 hours). The thing I love about Qantas is that it regularly changes it's fleet to newer aircraft...I mean it makes enough money doing so anyway. The fairly new B747 they have will be gone in a few years after the A380's and 787's come. The B737-400 I think will be gone and replaced with 787 and/or 737-800. I never really complain on their flight when getting home. I always fly to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane first when flying out of Canberra. Citizens of Canberra hate this, but I like it for many reasons. for one thing, there are flights every 20 - 45 minutes throughout each day from Sydney - Canberra and vice versa. Melbourne is a little elss dense, but maybe 7-8 flights a day and Canberra - Brisbane is about 4 or 5.
I actually don't understand why the Atalia flight didn't "speed up" if it was late. Every time there is a 20 minute delay in Sydney going to Canberra, I know that they speed up because one time the normal 50 minute flight, took less than 30 minutes! It was pretty funny because I was in Row 6 and my eldest brother was in the seat behind me, and after they gave me refreshments, the captain said "Uh...ladies and gentlemen...we are now making our decent into Canberra, can the cabin crew please (do they landing (something)??)" It was pretty cool and weird, but everyone just looked at each other with the "What the....already!!" Look on their faces.
Title: Re: How many kids and teenagers are playing?
Post by: Filippo on August 31, 2009, 08:36:38 AM
Maybe the Alitalia captain couldn't care less, or he didn't want to waste fuel for "only" 20mins delay.

My first flight was a Qantas Flight from Darwin  - Perth...I was like six months old...maybe younger...The first flight I remember is a Qantas flight from Darwin - Adelaide...that flight was actualyl supposed to be a Darwin - Sydney flight...but something was wrong with the plane and the Itinerary that said "Darwin - Sydney - Canberra" was actually "Darwin - Adelaide - Melbourne - Canberra"...17th January is a rememberance day for us...how it took 18 hours to arrive at our new home.

I like cars that have an interesting thing that makes them special. The Honda Accord I like because it is reasonably priced and looks very nice, even looks like an exec's car if you have a fully loaded one...I don't like porsche's though....too lazy design team. been the same since they first came out. :P terrible.

I'm a student..but I will be working with Qantas on their 100th Year of service - that's my plan anyway. I'll either be a pilot or a lawyer for them - no similarities on either job but it is what i PLAN to do.
I'm not so much into cars anymore...I was...actually...I really love the Pagini Zonda's!!!  ::)...but I am more of a plane freak...speaking of which I am on one tomorrow morning 0930 (local time - GM+10) so lets hope it isnt delayed.... :-\

well, about the boring stuff.... what do you have friends without hobbies for ;D ;D??

There are some guys in my class, not having anything to do, due to i.e. weekly internet time of 1hr!!!!
yeah, I'd kinda kill my mom for doing that, but she doesn't, cause she knows me to bring the whole household down within a time of 10 mins ;D ;D

and the other hw are done after 1100..... so i have to hurry, because each morning I gotta get up a 5.45, and I'd like to sleep around 4hrs/night, which is the best, as I've tested

so, now I'm doing hw again!

good luck. btw, Porsche took over VW, not the other way around. Also, My BW airline is up to 31 aircraft with around 10-13 aircraft on order (I haven't checked since there was only 9 on order :P) and when those aircraft are delivered, I will be serving 29 destinations outside of Taiwan, along with connection flights throughout Taiwan. I can now officially say that I am the Airline of Taiwan because I have the most flights in (physically in) Taiwan. Plum Airline provide limited service to destinations from their TPE hub, while I literally connect almost all of Taiwan, most of the flights being served by B737-300s. I will have around 42 aircraft when all are delivered. That's a personal record, as most of my airlines are quite successfull, but only with 23 aircraft (my prior record), and now I've reached more than that with B737-300s alone! 8)

btw, I'm in a 1960's-style bar/restaurant that even is playing Bing Crosby as load as if it were him LIVE.... :o

you got sth wrong there, the companies merged actually, and both names will be let running, as VW lets Bentley, Seat, etc. run under original names, because the cars are local patriots in their foreign country!
but in the end VW has now most of Porsche's stocks ;) ;)

try this one here (sorry, it's a geman newspaper, but you can maybe read the heading/subheading (help from dict.cc (http://dict.cc))

even in german, it still says in the last paragraph that porsche will have 75% of VW's stocks, and looks to have full ownership in a couple of years. (Bislang ist Porsche erst mit 50,8 Prozent an Volkswagen beteiligt, will aber 75 Prozent des Konzerns besitzen.) My dad reads everything about auto companies so he would know, and it even says the same like what I said in the newspaper that you used to prove me wrong. sorry, but facts are facts. ;) (btw, don't get mad at me, I'm just trying to make sure you know what is really happening. :))

You might want to read up on more current events. :)

That was old news, from back in April.   Since about July that story has completely changed around.

Porsche's attempted takeover bid of VW earlier this year failed.  Big time.  They borrowed billions to buy the stock, but ultimately failed and drove themselves nearly into bankruptcy.  In a matter of months Porsche went from posting profits and getting ready to takeover VW, to posting huge losses, having spent more cash than they even had, and were announcing that they were on the verge of bankruptcy.  They had to get bailed out by the government of Qatar, their own government denied them any additional funds, and the banks were coming for 'em.  The Board of Porsche fired the CEO and CFO for driving the company into bankruptcy with their failed takeover bid.

Then it gets interesting...  Porsche owed VW $1B in cash loans it has received last year (which Porsche then used, ironically enough to try to buy VW -- that, my friends, takes some cajones).  With the takeover bid failed, Porsche in HUGE negative cash, no banks willing to give them a dime, and the payment to VW due this year, Porsche was screwed and the German government refused to give them money to pay VW off.   In the end, Volkswagen offered Porsche an ultimatum -- Pay Up or surrender your company.  Porsche with no cash (actually negative cash), debtors lining up, and no one willing to give them any money, had no choice -- VW announced last month that they were buying the majority of Porsche in a merger arrangement for a steal at $5B.

Now, the Board of VW is calling the shots at Porsche.  They've already axed the Cayenne because it competes too much with Audi's offerings.  And even axed the brand-new Panamera before it hit the streets.  Both will only last as long as their current models (the Panamera being brand-new, the Cayenne being re-engineered for '11MY) and won't be getting any future redesigns after the current designs run through the next few years.  VW will be returning Porsche to its exotic sports car roots, as its SUV and Sedan offerings compete with existing VW products (namely Audi).

I knew that... ;D ;D

Hey did anyone like the cayenne in the first place? I thought the only good thing about it was that the engine made a good noise, that's about it. The styling was rubbish, everything but the engine was a miserable fail, and the price was a true Porsche price, overcharging to make as much from idiods who even like the filthy thing in the first place so they could be rich. Not to mention, it's about time someone else ran Porsche. The styling board at Porsche is, like, 150 years old because when they do "restyling", all their really doing is fine-tuning the looks to make them look even smaller than they are. They are, in my opinion, one of the most lazy design boards I have ever seen. For instance, look at the Honda Civic. In 2000 it was small, and was very cheap and had no real exiting part about it. in 2003, they re-did the interior and changed the looks of it almost completely, and it was a bit more exiting. They also added the Civic Hybrid model. now, in 2009, they changed it again and made it bigger, more exiting and far better looking than prior models, but still affordable. They even added more standard equipment to make it better for your buck than the other competing models. Porsche: all they did was gradually make it more expensive and add things that even Hyundai's have standard, but charging people for it. I think 911s are nice but WAAAAY too expensive for what their worth, not to mention the depreciation is like the number for the newest olympics. The second you even touch the pavement off the dealership, it's down from $200K+ to about $40-50k. That's even worse than Jaguar and Chrysler.  Everyone thinks that if you have a Porsche that the person is like rich. Yeah, because they kinda have to be to afford one! Not to mention, if you are actually rich, why would you spend it on an overprice race car than thousands of people have. You look rich by having an exclusive vehicle, not a Porsche that so-and-so's mom drives, along with Such-and-such's dad, friend, cousin, grandmother, aunt and brother all drive. You want something that no one else in your neighborhood has, that is what makes people look more rich. For example, a new Porsche 911 Turbo costs 160k( CAD). A new Audi R8 costs 140k CAD. You get a far more rare car for 10k less than the small Porsche. I would go for the Audi if I had to choose. I do like Porsche's as they're....well, a Porsche, but as a driving car for me....Porsche can eat my cr**.

well at the average around "3" ("C" in GB marking system)....

I average at about 70-90 every year. I only got one 90% year average, and that was when I liked school....(in the, like, 50s ;D) but now it's around 75-85%. The GB Marking System is only used hear until abuot Grade 5. In Grade 6 we use %. My English teacher in Gr. 8 (she was a total beatch) I remember always marked by number, then a +/- if you earned it/didn't earn it :P. 3- was my lowest mark in Gr. 8, and in Gr. 7 about 2 - 3 was my lowest (I was bad in Gr. 7). btw, I would really like to go to school in GB or Deutchland. I'm going to study Deutch/German next year, as I still have to have stupid french this year... :P

well.... first: thats the problem of living in canada ;D ;D ;
and second: good choice for german, I's a very nice language, and has some (not many) similarities to french/english/latin.
also in europe it is a very useful language, due to many people understanding it, e.g. many italians/polnishs(?)/etc.
if you than need some support in german, I can(hopefully) give it to you!

wow. You must also remember the War of 1812 between the US and Canada. the president at the time thought "Those Canadians are all too soft. We should take them over as I can become the greatest president of the greatest country in the world!" . How do you like them apples, we put up a fight you never saw coming! Especially when, after the war was over and we all returned our claimed lands back to their original owners, I went up to the president and slapped him hard and said "never expected that from Canada did ya?!?!" and walked away. ;D Just joking. the US is a very good Country, along with Canada, so if I had to choose sides in a war between them: I'd choose......to move to Poland or Germany.

where do you go "mehrere Male" (several times), in summer?? your relatives??
and the thing about the skype number:
I thought of getting it from you to send you over my version of the Simpsons movie! not necessary if you don't need the german simpsons movie!
and use dict.cc instead of google translate.... you need to translate each word, but it's better than google!! It's from the University of Chemnitz (Saxony, Germany), and very prooved, and you can hear many of the words!!
