the important thing is your local constraints. You won't need the same fleet in BSL than in ORY, for example. I voted Connie as they absolutely kick ass, but they are useful only in certain circumstances, and also, their limited numbers is also a problem.

In that case I would join an alliance. They can tell you all about them.
What Gazz already mentioned which size, range etc is suitable for your strategy.
This is not an easy game where you simply can pick a popular plane and win.
Also the game may push you into other choices
