Is there a mistake with the range of the A320neo extra fuel tank variant? The range should be bigger. The max payload and the cargo capacity are smaller than on the other variant, so what does the extra fuel do exactly?

Is there a mistake with the range of the A320neo extra fuel tank variant? The range should be bigger. The max payload and the cargo capacity are smaller than on the other variant, so what does the extra fuel do exactly?

it makes the tank bigger. at "standard range", the tank isnt being filled, so it is just reducing the range of the aircraft (and therefore the range is reduced by the extra weight). when you reduce passenger numbers on the plane, it starts to fill the extra tank with the payload being reduced. so the benefits of the extra tank are only really worth anything if you decide to fly below standard payload.
