Staff requirements
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:24:11 PM »
Hello guys, I have a question regarding staff requirements.

I have 10 A321, every plane is scheduled to make an everyday flight, so it starts from the base in the morning and comes back in the evening (not late).
I've just found that I have 121 pilots. I don't understand why do real company should have so many pilots for only ten aircrafts.
It's more than 12 pilots per plane, that means every pilot have a flight about once a week (because there should be two pilots in A321).

I can assume a company should have pilots "in reserve" to replace people who are ill or having a vacation, but not three times more then available flights? I can even agree with doubled staff, but not tripled.

PS I tried to find similar topic, but got no luck.

Found some answers, like that: https://www.airwaysim.com/forum/index.php/topic,18655.msg88717.html#msg88717
But still don't agree with that formula.

A company that I work for operates 45 airplanes and has 670 pilots employed (and it's stretched to the max - can't get holidays etc, so too few pilots at the moment).. That's 14.8 pilots per plane, if one were to count it that way (but it includes both short and longhaul operations, for a pure shorthaul ops the number would be tad smaller)..

The basis of the flight crew number calculations are based on real data and stats, but they always assume a full schedule for each plane so operating just a single flight per day has the same staff requirement than 4 daily flights per plane.

Thanks, that was my mistake.

Going to implement 24x7 schedule of flights to utilize all opportunities.
