Does anyone own a Smart TV?
« on: November 27, 2012, 07:13:51 PM »
We're thinking of getting a new TV and have been looking into Smart TVs as a possible option, as being able to stream films and catch up TV is quite appealing.

Does anyone own one and if so what are the benefits and problems with them?

Thanks,

Dave :)

I have a Sharp LC60LE633U that I picked up earlier this year and it is allegedly a "smart" tv. Like the "smart" bluray players and other connected boxes, it works but the interface is clunky. I actually don't use any of the "apps" on the TV because it doesn't do Amazon prime streaming, so I've been using my Panasonic bluray player for that and youtube for the daughter's Donald Duck demands.  I also have a cable box and a windows media center box hooked up to it, so I've got a few different media sources to chose from.

Overall, if you find ones that are compatible with the streaming services that you want to use, they should be functional, but overall, the UI leaves MUCH to be desired (at least it did on everything that I looked at).....

I have a 20 year old JVC screen that still doesn't show it's age... I can stream from iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, Macbook and iMac using Twonky and my cable company's Horizon box that is used as WiFi router and digital TV receiver. (actually it works the same as an Apple TV.... but is cheaper and better) but I'm not sure if your TV company also is your ISP and does offer these possibilities.

I'm currently on a 120 Mbit line and I'm quite happy with it  ;D

MY Horizon box doesn't work well, and UPC doesn't want to fix it. I think we share the same cable operator

I have a 48" LG 3D smart TV...its awesome.  More and more apps appear daily and the range of content already is massive.  Streaming from Youtube etc is faultless and great quality.  On 3D versions there is also a great choice of free 3D content.  I would recommend smart TV's   ;D

Looks like we have a nice fruity cargo cult going here.  Maybe you guys cam make a box out of wood, put an Apple logo on it, put it on top of your TV, while you wait for the next cargo to arrive...   ;)
