Server downtime this morning
« on: October 27, 2012, 01:48:03 PM »
We encountered an unexcepted web server crash this morning (Sat 27th), and it took an unfortunately long time before we were able to restore all of our services. Currently it seems that everything is back in order, and games will progress normally from now on. During the downtime the game times were stopped.

It seems that Mr.Murphy struck well this time, as the server downtime was not noticed until mid-day local time. We have automated SMS alerts of any server downtime, but the alerts were unnoticed during the night. Also it took rather long time before our server hosting people were able to reach the server from our call (due to weekend). Once our access to the server was restored the actual process of checking and restoring the services took also longer than expected. But hopefully everything works now, and have to remember that this is our first "major" server crash in many years..

The Jet Age game world was slightly delayed due to these problems but this game world will begin shortly. Our apologies for this unexpected downtime.

AirwaySim has an incredible uptime. In my very active and long time I'm member here the minor issues I noticed maybe 1-2 for less than 10 minutes and this bigger one now.

In the four years I played World of Warcraft the game was broken twice a week for up to one day.

My ISP, a big German company with own modern network, has a downtime of about 1-2 hours per week.

Our former very reliable Counter-Strike server supplier had downtimes of 5-10 minutes a week.

So, sami. At the end of the day you and AirwaySim are the most reliable internetservices I've met in about 17 years of Internet, including several multi billion dollar companies and pages or institutions I pay much more money for than for AirwaySim.

Oh, and you provided us with information via Twitter and the page itself!

Thanks for that.

On the other hand I really got the same withdrawal symptons like WoW was down for an important raid. :P So nice to see AWS back!

Unfortunately, for yet unknown reason, the server crashed again today (at the exact same time as yesterday). We have now moved the services to a completely another server machine, which may be a tad slower than the original one.

Unfortunately during the move, we were not able to use the very latest databases, but instead had to use a backup that was 4 hours old. So this means that any changes you made in the last 4 hours, like creating new airlines or new routes, are unfortunately not available. All Credits purchases from this period are however available and added to your account.

You may also need to clear the cookies set by our server and then login again if you have troubles in some of the functions (since we are on a new server now).

We deeply apologize for these troubles and hope to fix the original server as soon as possible to be able to resume the normal service levels.

If you have any additional questions, or any trouble with using the site, please be in touch with us. https://www.airwaysim.com/Contactus

Also, just noticed that LOGO and LIVERY files for airlines were not part of the backup, so for this time being they are not available. We will see about them on monday or tuesday when we continue fixing the original server. Feel free to upload a new one for now.

And also the SSL connection, https:// ... is not available on this server, but it's really not needed for now since we do not handle any credit card information on this actual server.

Tried to upload a new logo and livery, but it didn't work. I got this message:

"     Error

Unable to create thumbnail image of the aircraft livery (1).

Please click the following link to go back to our main page at https://www.airwaysim.com/."

Also, I tried to post a bug in the bugs forums about a huge spike in pax flown with a small image attachment 190kb, but I got some strange error message.

Logos and attachments are working now. (can be uploaded)

The originally uploaded logos are still stored on the old server, but we cannot access it at the moment. When we can the logos will be moved here.

(and during server restart one day in DotM game world was counted twice so that explains additional pax/income for one week)

Sami,

Cudos to you and your staff for "keeping the lights on."  We are all very appreciative of the hard work.

Secure SSL connection is also back online at this time, if someone prefers it.

Logos and liveries are also back.

Our original server is back in business, and we'll probably migrate back to the old server (with brand new hardware) during this week. Perhaps even tomorrow...

(The migration to the original server will include about 30-60 minute downtime)

We are now back in our original server. Please report if you see any weirdness or something does not work normally!

If someone is interested of the technical aspects ... We did some hardware maintenance on our dedicated server machine, and as mentioned were running the services on a temporary server for the last week. During the maintenance we upgraded our server's hardware (for example new CPU, doubled the RAM) and also installed everything (OS) from scratch. On software side we also decided to upgrade to a new database engine that should be a bit more efficient.

So can we go to a 15min game world?  :-[
