I was curious is it possible to buy production slots because I see it as kinda weird when I got to buy a plane and there are slots open in this month but I have to wait X amount of months to actually get the plane. Is it possible to use those slots or potentially buy a slot from another airline or pick up the slot of one that goes bankrupt or ceases operation?

Short answer: No.

Long answer, it takes x amount of time to make all the parts, assemble them, flight test the plane, and deliver it so about 3 months is standard before you receive your first frame. Early in the game like this when no new orders are in, the used plane brokers will buy all the open production slots that are not used to beef up the used market availability-you should see those early productions slots turn red soon after the first day is over in about 14 hours.

To answer the other part of your question, when another airline goes bankrupt and forfeits production slots, those slots will be released back to the public pool after a few game days and you will be able to place orders and have them assigned to those slots AS LONG AS you do not have planes on order due for delivery later in the production que.

I would think that if a slot is open an not filled the airline would simply move up production dates if a customer is ok with it because that plane is already somewhat built

That does make sense, but the minimum gap between deliveries and the 3 or so month wait period before the first delivery is a built in anti-measure to prevent larger, wealthier airlines from hogging all the early delivery slots leaving smaller/poorer airlines with long waits for desirable planes or forcing them to pay for highly inflated leases. If you search for this topic, there have been several debates with more information and ideas than I can supply here!
