launch customer question

i am curious how this 'launch customer' feature is supposed to work.

i understand if you order 6 or more of a particular new model, you receive launch customer discount.

however, i noticed in the production list for that new model, another airline is the actual 'launch customer'.

why is that another airline become the 'launch customer' even though i receive launch customer discount for the new model?

possibly a different version for example Boeing 717-200 and Boeing 717-200HGW

so being a launch customer for the Boeing 717-200 and another airline being the launch customer for the Boeing 717-22HGW

i was launch customer for all 3 version of the crj7. however, i WASNOT the first airline to fly any version of the aircraft.

seems pointless to be launch customer discount, but not first to fly the aircraft.
