Cost of New Base?

In approximately 6 game months I will be able to open a new base. Approximately how much will the one-time opening costs be? I know that this depends on airport size (the new base I will probably open in a size 4 airport), but I want to know an approximate estimate - should I count on the costs being 2, 5, 10 or 20 million?

I want to know this since I have to have new aircraft at the base when I open it, and I would rather order new aircraft than buy used ones. But this means that I have to place the order within a few game months, and I don't want to be stuck with new aircraft at my home base which I cannot use if I can't afford to open the new base due to the cost of aircraft orders.

Cost of new base depends on the size of the airport and year you are in.  In 2013, opening a base at JFK cost me $50M.

As far as aircraft, you can rebase your aircraft.  So it is ok to place order and have it delivered to your HQ.

If you order several aircraft and you are still waiting for some when the new base is open, you can change the destination where the new aircraft will arrive.

As far as bases, you should always try to fly all of the profitable routes from your HQ base before opening a new base.  New base has some overhead.

OK, thanks. 2013 and JFK - 50 million, that should make my costs in 1999 and to a smaller airport much smaller, but still gives me some sort of an idea.

I knew about the re-base thing, problem is that most of the aircraft I plan to order won't have any function in my HQ since I won't have any routes to fly them to. So if I would get these planes and not be able to afford a new base, they would just be standing there, collecting dust and costing me money (I have practically no more routes to expand to, not counting a couple of small local ones). But thanks for giving me the info on changing delivery location, that is very good to know!

For me, in the same game as you, in 1998 and choosing a size 5 airport made me spend $ 18 million.

Remember that the second base has a limit of 100 aircraft.
Other detail is that once you open a new base the game asks you to transfer 5 aircraft from your current base to second. In my case, as I had no aircraft stopped, I had to cancel five routes, so a little before opening the second base start to buy aircrafts and let them stand, without routes.

Thanks for the reply! Then I know approximately how much it will cost and can plan accordingly!

You don't have to transfer 5 aircraft, that is just an option to go along with the base opening and help you get started there. The one thing which is a must is to make sure that you have 3 aircraft based there (whether upon base opening, transferring fleet from HQ, or new orders) as this is necessary to retain the base. But there is a generous time period for this anyway.
