Crew requirements

I am puzzled by the number of crew I require for my aircraft;

When looking at the staff required I notice the following:

- cabin crew: 5.25 crews ( which would be about right for a 24/7 operation!)

- pilots:
     - small and medium aircraft: 3 crews per aircraft
    -  large aircraft: 5.25 crews per aircraft
    -  very large aircraft: 10 crews per aircraft

I have difficulty understanding these differences - what are the design parameters? what justifies the 10 crews per aircraft for large aircraft?

Beats the heck out of me   I operate 8 Large a/c (DC-6B's) and I am required to staff 100 pilots and 100 cabin crew for them.  Figure that one out.

time schedules ... many other things.  there have been many discussions on this already.  It is one of those that will just end up in the black hole of uncertainty.

The situation of my airline is the following:

I have 4 very large aircraft (DC8) which require a 3 man crew - for this I employ 120 pilots, which means 120:4= 30 pilots per aircraft

Considering they require 3 pilots to fly them this means 30:3 = 10 CREWS per aircraft.

Considering my aircraft, employed on medium haul routes fly 4000 hours per year for a total of 4000*4= 16000 hours this means each pilot flies 400 hours per year. A reasonable (European) requirement would be 800 hours

Am I missing something?
