First Vickers VC10 Arrives in Montréal as Airline Unveils Special Canadiens Livery
Montréal, March 1963 — NorthStar Airways today celebrated two historic milestones that will shape the future of both the airline and the city of Montréal.
Before thousands of invited guests, aviation enthusiasts, government officials, media representatives, and members of the Montréal Canadiens organization, NorthStar Airways officially welcomed its first Vickers VC10 jet aircraft and simultaneously announced a landmark partnership with the Montréal Canadiens.
The event marks the beginning of the Jet Age for NorthStar Airways and the start of a long-term relationship between two of Montréal's most recognizable institutions.
As part of the announcement, the airline unveiled a specially painted VC10 featuring elements inspired by the Canadiens' iconic colours and identity while retaining NorthStar's distinctive blue-and-gold branding. Prominently displayed near the aircraft's nose is the Canadiens crest alongside the inscription:
"The Canadiens fly NorthStar"
Beginning with the upcoming season, NorthStar Airways will become responsible for transporting the Canadiens to away games throughout North America, ensuring the club travels in the comfort and speed of the modern jet era.
Speaking during the ceremony, NorthStar Airways executives described the occasion as one of the most significant moments in the airline's history.
> "Today we celebrate more than the arrival of a new aircraft. We celebrate the beginning of a new chapter for Montréal, for NorthStar Airways, and for one of the greatest hockey clubs in the world."
The arrival of the VC10 represents the first step in the airline's ambitious fleet modernization programme.
NorthStar Airways confirmed that it has now placed orders for a total of 112 Vickers VC10 and Super VC10 aircraft, making the programme the largest fleet investment ever undertaken by the airline and one of the most ambitious commercial aviation projects in Canada.
The aircraft will gradually transform NorthStar's international network, connecting Montréal, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto with destinations throughout North America, Europe, South America, Africa, and beyond.
Since its founding in 1950, NorthStar Airways has transported more than 27 million passengers, grown into Canada's third-largest airline, and established itself as Montréal's leading carrier. As a founding member of the Phoenix Alliance, the airline continues to strengthen its position as a global connector while remaining firmly rooted in the city where its story began. The newly introduced partnership with the Montréal Canadiens reflects that commitment.
The collaboration will include exclusive team travel arrangements, fan initiatives, community programmes, and the introduction of the new:
NorthStar Airways Player of the Match Award
which will be presented following every Canadiens home game to recognize outstanding performances both on and off the ice.
As the newly delivered VC10 taxied past cheering spectators beneath a sea of NorthStar and Canadiens flags, the symbolism was unmistakable.
One aircraft.
One city.
Two proud Montréal institutions.
Entering a new era together.
