📰 Press Release – July 22, 1991Copenhagen, Denmark
Danish Airways Acquired by Norwegian Investor – Rebranded as "Nordavind"A powerful new force is taking shape in Nordic aviation. Today, Danish Airways officially announces its acquisition by Norwegian entrepreneur Torvald Hansen, and with it, a complete transformation under the new name: Nordavind.
"We're honoring our Danish legacy while building a new Nordic future," Hansen stated during today's press event at Copenhagen Airport. "Nordavind is more than a brand — it's a promise to connect the North, both near and far."
✈️ Farewell to the Past, Focus on the FutureAs part of the transition, Nordavind is beginning the phased retirement of its legacy fleet, including the Douglas DC-8-72 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft.
"These aircraft served us faithfully through decades of Danish aviation history," said Fleet Director Jakob Lindholm. "But to meet the demands of the 1990s and beyond, we are investing in a more unified and modern fleet."
🛫 Introducing the Next Generation FleetNordavind will build its future around five aircraft types, chosen for flexibility, range, and passenger comfort:
- Airbus A320 & A321 – Ideal for short and medium-haul routes across Europe
- Airbus A330 & A340 – Positioned for intercontinental expansion and premium service
- Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia – Perfectly suited for frequent regional flights and short runways
Deliveries of new Airbus aircraft will begin shortly, while DC-8 and DC-9 aircraft will be fully phased out by 1997.
🌍 Copenhagen at the CoreNordavind will retain Copenhagen Airport (CPH) as its central hub, with strategic bases in Billund, Aalborg, Aarhus, and Vágar (Faroe Islands) — ensuring strong domestic coverage while building capacity for long-haul growth.
🎨 A New Look for the NorthThe new Nordavind visual identity features:
- Midnight blue fuselage undersides – symbolizing Nordic skies
- Bright white upper fuselage – evoking winter clarity
- Dynamic red wave elements – capturing the spirit and motion of the wind
- Tail emblem – a stylized red wind symbol, bold and forward-moving
"We wanted a visual identity that feels both modern and grounded in Nordic tradition," said Brand Director Camilla Sørensen.
