Title: please do not launch Air travel boom #2 without the new ordering system
Post by: blair21088 on May 01, 2009, 04:21:25 AM
Please do not start the next air travel boom game without implementing the new slot based ordering system. I like the changes to the used aircraft market, but they make it more important to order new planes. In air travel boom #1 queues for all long haul aircraft except Russian ones are at a minimum of 3 years. combine this with a slower used aircraft market and you might as well log in once per game year to assign routes to your new planes and place your next mega order for 50 744s. Please delay the launch of Game 2 until you can add in this important feature.

Agreed. I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say I probably won't join the new game if the new ordering system isn't implemented.

The current used market would be fine if you didn't have to wait 4 years for a new plane.

Just a theory but what do you think.

Scenario:

At start up, you were not able to get good planes and/ or you based yourself at the wrong airport. for a few months you struggled and got enough cash to put down a payment on a new jet lease, eg: a A320 or 737 or something similiar. In the mean time some airlines got the right plane for the job witch enabled growth at a steady pace. Finaly your new plane arrives, about 1 year later and you feel that you finaly can start to grow. Then C checks start rolling in on an old aircraft costing you a mint, which eats up the profit of your new jet. if you break the lease on your old plane, you have shell out millions anyway and loose routes as you cannot get a suitable replacement. You feel obligated to order another plane if you want to be able to compete. next wait is 3 years or so untill delivery, before you know it your negative cash flow and no credit line. Then you end up Bankrupted. Ok this is normal and makes sense.

Now my Theory,

When you bankrupted, your competitor who was bigger and had a more modern fleet, with a string of new aircraft coming on line, was able to jump on your routes or add capacity to his exisitng ones, and grow further. He becomes even more profitable and can continue to order new aircraft. You rejoin the game a fresh, hoping for a new stratergy to work. yet again, you can only get a few old and non competative aircraft and try to find some routes that still has demand. If you start of with a Fokker F27 your hoping for routes with at least demand for about 60 pax. furthermore you will  need about 3-4 F-27s even if you want to pull in about a hundred thousand a week gross. Soon your have c-checks coming which, for a 15-20 year old fokker is about a million dollars and out of service for 2-3 weeks. Even if they are a few months apart before you know it your in the red again. So, the airline that went bankrupt the first time is bound to go bankrupt again, thus eliminating any risk of the bigger one losing strength, enabling him to continue  ordering new planes lengthening waiting times for new planes. The cycle seems endless unless you were lucky at the start. Perhaps in the first games, ( this is my first game: Airboom) the system was different and a lot of big operaters went kaput, but they way it is now, i realy dont see many big operators going bust as we the underlings continue to do so.

Just a theory and would love to hear other opinions.

I understand your frustration, but then again its all about what you entered the game to do. What the previous players are doing is nothing you cannot do yourself as there is no magic to what they are doing. In Air Boom #3 there was one player who was in Okinawa and had like three planes (all bought) who was making a killing. No, he/she wasn't making bank or in the top 10 but had a good little thing going. All depends on what you want the outcome to be.

But you're right in the sense that once you bankrupt then its pretty much over unless you want ot re-think your strategy. Maybe a bush pilot thing in Canada?

All-in-all this game is addictive and the only thing that could make it better (other than extending my damn runway) would be to have cargo hauling a la UPS/Fedex

Is there going to be another Air Travel Boom? If so, does anyone know when it will be out?

I suddenly remembered that AA got priority when ordering the 787.
Could the same be applied to AWS, the more planes you have bought from the company in the past (loyalty), the higher your position on the list. (<- kinda like op-ups ;D) However, the list should be shuffled a bit to be fairer to new airlines.

Otherwise good, but that again gives too good an advantage to the biggest airlines.
