As the topic says, is there a way to know before buying, if an aircraft has a conversion to cargo option available?

Look at the aircraft's model info page to see what conversions/upgrades are possible.

It's the last item before it lists out the operators of that model.

Can be converted to L1049F freighter

Yep, that'll show you if it can currently be converted to anything else.

If you want to know if it can be converted at some future point, you'll need to look in a GW that is currently in a later year, or ask about it. Alliance and/or AWS discord are both great resources for things like that.

I'm sure I did see that at some point before, but of course didn't find it when I was looking for the info. Probably because I was looking at new aircraft. :)

One additional question: Do you have to purchase the plane or can a leased plane also be converted?

You can only apply conversions to owned aircraft.
