Title: Coronavirus vs 9/11
Post by: arefixz on March 22, 2020, 06:18:09 PM
What do you think about the effect of coronavirus in airline industry. Is it more severe than 9/11?
Should coronavirus event be hardcoded into aws as 2020 crisis similar to 9/11 and 1970s oil crisis?

I don't think coronavirus should be hardcoded, but I do think random events including pandemics should be added.  Even if air travel isn't effected, the economy is and that's where CBD comes in where cargo volume etc. would go down.  Having 9/11 hard coded is kinda pointless because we all know it's coming decades in advance.  9/11 blindsided airlines, but in AWS it's just "meh" because everyone has already prepared for it.  If 9/11 were randomized it would be much more interesting.

Small events for flavour are kind of interesting. Huge events on the scale of 9/11 or what's currently going on aren't interesting, because we don't have the ability to react to them. Take 9/11, pax numbers tank for up to 2 RL weeks. If I have even a 300 plane airline, exactly what am I going to do in response? I can't fire staff, I can't temporarily lay them off or pay them less. It takes a few hours to schedule 300 planes, am I really going to spend the time required to redo schedules in response to the lowered demand, knowing that in a week or so I'm going to have to spend another few hours putting a new schedule together?

I'd be in favor of an epic event to end these epic games. Think of it this way: If all the airlines go BK, we get to start a new GW much sooner  :)

Might give Sami legit cover to implement major updates too. Instead polls, forcing updates and dealing with whining... just drop coronavirus, kill our airlines, update, new gameworld start.

Sami, just take my credits already!!

9/11 was a minor inconvenience for air travel compared to the worldwide effect of COVID-19. IRL 90% of the effect of 9/11 was felt by North American airlines and loads (although not RASM) was back to normal in a matter of months. This virus is affecting every airline and every country in the world. 90% of demand just vanished virtually overnight. Where I an at we went from 80% loads to 16% loads in 2 weeks, and best guess is an all clear is not given for AT LEAST 2 months. Once all clear is given, there will likely be a secondary spike in cases which will keep travel depressed. I would be surprised in we are back to "normal" by this time next year.

much bigger than 9/11. also if you consider: the airline industry is much much bigger than it was back then. plus, its worldwide. and it doesnt only affect airlines, but also hotels, bus services, trains, ... which will affect it for the years to come.

honestly, not sure if i shouldnt take some crappy amazon vouchers for my frequent flier miles...  :-[

But i think freight didnt go down during this pandemic... It actually went up as people are shopping online more  ;)

I work for an airline in the UK that has just been grounded. Believe me, this is serious stuff and some airlines will not make it, jobs will be lost and demand will be affected for many months after this virus has gone.

I am now grounded for two months so will have plenty time to build my airline on here!!
