So I just started playing the game (today), and want to lease an aircraft, but am not getting that option when searching for used airplanes.
Is there some restriction that prevents me from doing that as a brand new user?

You have already leased two used aircraft since opening your airline.
As per the start of all new game worlds, the first real 24 hours the game is "paused" to allow all players to join and establish their airline and initial routes.
This message is clearly displayed on the used aircraft page:

You cannot order any more aircraft until the simulation time starts and day changes. New aircraft orders are available when the simulation starts.
