Hello,
After a 2 year break from AWS I'm happy to say I'm back. After a succession of generally terrible airlines I'm back in BW1 with a good one, just got my 100th plane. My worst airlines were always in GW4, but I really enjoyed alliance gameplay (was a member of Phoenix back then) and the social aspect that came with it. I'd like to hop into a game world and startup another airline, but it seems like this would be quite difficult later in the game.
Now I won't be joining the new GW2 that just started- I have really no interest in 1950s planes and would only play in a GW ~1985 or later. I'd like to stick around for when GW3 reboots but I feel like that will be a long wait, stuck in BW purgatory. So as you can see I'm in a dilemma. Is there anyway to have a successful airline late in the game?

Of course! Right now is a great time to join GW4 as fuel is cheap, planes are cheaper, and cargo, pax demand are really picking up steam (mid 1990's)

Yes.
I predict loads of people will quit GW3 (2017) to go to GW2, so I'd hop in there and wait for BKs..
Welcome back!

I did in the previous GW2 and ended doing very well in the cargo category (made a few people angry in doing so). Just do a lot of research and find a fairly empty hub that fits the style you want to play.

you were rather impressive, to say the least.
and you're right about the style of play; once a game is open, entering means choosing carefully one's entry point. When you begin in the beginning, you can crag & boast about going where you want. It's not a good idea when entering midgame. You might be lucky...or not.

Ah, you're the reason why I just got the #3 cargo achievement and not #2. How I dispise you. Not. Congrats, really well played! 8)
PS: Who got angry? We want all the gossip!
I complained about how cargo is rewarded and used you as an example (coming in very late, insane growth, highest pile of cash in the end). But there was nothing about your playing or yourself, just wanted to point out the game inconsistency on that matter.
I want to become pro cargo player... how do you become one of those?

Honestly, find a job that doesnt care how much airwaysim you play. It takes a LOT of time to find which routes are winners in cargo, because you have to check both directions. and theres a lot of small airports that have huge demand. If youre playing only the big airports with cargo, youre missing out on a lot.

That's pretty much me.. Lol.
on the original question, it's always going to be hit or miss. If you recognize anyone in the game you can always ask what's going on. In the long games, 1983-1985 is a good period to jump in as usually the 1978-1982 inflation surge/oil spike usually knocks out a good number of large players and then prices stabalize for awhile. Mid 2000s usually sees another shakeout--whether not prepared for higher operating costs, inability to weed out old planes fast enough or simple boredom. last 10-15 years of any of the long games are reasonable as many are on cruise control and the population declines.

:) :) I am pretty sure Talentz was sarcastic. Even though the stats don't say much about Cargo, Talentz won the last GW3:
