(and of course theres also the fact the 737-800 has more range but for this poll, lets play fair and say the A320 and 738 are competing up to 2700NM)
I'd say it's less about these specific aircraft but more the family they are in and the capabilities the family offers. In this case the best seller in the A320 family is often the A321 simply down to its greater capacity. The 737-900 just can't really compete in that regard. That said, for some airlines I'm sure it could be made to work. All depends on your cabin configuration and what routes you send them on.
