Title: Route Image 100..so stop route marketing?
Post by: Tarkan on February 21, 2009, 01:30:13 AM
About 90% of my routes have images of a 100. Wondering whether I can stop route marketing without impacting the route per se? In any case I have a permanent general campaign on as well.

I have lots of routes with 100 image that I haven't marketed for a long time (if ever). So I guess the answer is you can stop route marketing if there are no constant delays or other factors that tend to lower the image.

You seem to have been about this game for a while.  How does this type of delay damage your image?  Constant delays and cancellations.  My probability for turn around is set at 0% but I know that is not always possible but 9/12 flights delayed with 3/12 cancelled most of which were too short turn arounds when I have the probability of 0%.  I can cop maybe one cancellation or a couple of delays but this is ridiculous and occurs every week.  Have you experienced this type of constant delay before?

I don't know exactly how many cancellations is too much so that it starts to lower the route image. 3 in a week sounds like a lot, especially if it's every week. I usually set the turnaround time so that the probability of delay is about 10%. I pasted my statistics below, as you can see most of my delays and cancellations are due to weather and not scheduling.

Average departure delay of all flights    4 mins

Causes of delays, last 7 days            Total delay minutes
Scheduling (too short turn-arounds)    11909 mins   (~ 41.6 %)
Technical problem with aircraft            9 mins   (~ 0.03 %)
Airport and route traffic restrictions    3567 mins   (~ 12.46 %)
Airport weather conditions                    12853 mins   (~ 44.89 %)
Lack of staff                                    292 mins   (~ 1.02 %)
Unmotivated staff                            0 mins
Staff strike                                    0 mins

% of cancelled flights    1.8%

Causes of cancellations, last 7 days    Number of cancellations
Scheduling (too short turn-arounds)    45   (~ 31.91 %)
Technical problem with aircraft            14   (~ 9.93 %)
Airport weather conditions                    82   (~ 58.16 %)
Lack of staff                                    0
Unmotivated staff                            0
Aircraft grounded                            0
Staff strike                                    0

Number of flights last week: 8040

41 and 31% is alot.....

I set mine to 0% chance on the route, however, when I set the next flight, I have a minimum turnaround at my homebase, which causes the majority of my delays/cancellations.

What would not be a lot? What kind of average delay and cancellation should I be aiming for?

I use the same turnaround time at the hub, seems logical to me although I always have to calculate the departure time for the next flight because it shows the the game defaults to minimum turnaround at the hub (could there be a setting for this?).

Well, an ideal % would be 0 for both cancellation and delays but we know that will never happen ::)

I try to aim for 30% on delays and 25% for cancellations.

It is hard, especially when you get big so depending on your airline size that could actually be prety good.

I think that 4% of all flights beeing cancelled is A LOT ... im aiming for 1% at a max ... got 0.8% right now with 5296 flights per week ... but the time you save with short turns and stuff will never help the profit margin nearly as much as beeing on time!

My goal is 0% delays, and 0% cancellations. And with an average of 1 min delay (last 7 days) and just 0.2% cancellations, I think I'm doing pretty fine!

Hmm... so with all this talk about cancellations, how do my number stack up against the rest?

Guess that's a normal day. Only times im really concern about delays n crap are at the beginning. When it actually counts. Once you get big and/or your marketing costs 26M per week... doesnt really matter.. to me at least

Isnt that still cancellations? I mean if 25% of all flights get cancelled due to mx (whatever that is) and turnarounds allready that would make it worse ... or do you mean 25% of the 100% wich make up the total cancellations, not total flights?

You didnt read my post very well. I said the word "due".....  ;D

and yes, I was talking about  mx (mechanical) and to short turnaround casing X% of the total delays/cancellations.
