I'm in the 'red' at the moment and have put an aircraft up for sale.
Do I have to wait for another player to actually buy it or what happens?
I want the cash for it ASAP and will lease other planes instead.
Sometimes, randomly and rarely, the AI will purchase aircraft.

Correct. There is no "pause" function and nothing is local on your device.
