Title: Previews: New UI and layout
Post by: Sami on January 09, 2013, 11:05:26 AM
AirwaySim's site layout and user interface have been under updgrade for a longer period of time now. The project is now on the "final approach" stages and we're happy to post some previews of the work in progress. There is no ETA for the updates and changes yet.

A bit more previews of work in progress.

The upgraded layout will be also "mobile smart". This is a rather large fundamental change on the site and UI design.

In other words there will no longer be a separate mobile theme but instead the whole layout automatically scales according to the device in use (html5/css3).

Work is also in progress to find mobile compatible solutions to the various pop-up windows that are currently in use (which have usability issues with mobile browsers).

Today's agenda has been rework of the stats page etc...

(Technically and featurewise the same as the current one)
Title: Re: Previews: New UI and layout

The new and updated UI will also include some new features, some of them listed here:

* Dashboard / Airline Industry News section will be removed. All news will be browsable from the Dashboard.

* Rebrand/Rebase functionality will be removed. Airline renaming will be possible via Settings page in the future, rebasing feature will be removed as it's rather useless.

* Aircraft / Global Statistics and Aircraft / Production Lists pages will have search and filtering possibilities (ie. narrow down to certain fleet etc).

* As posted before, the whole mobile theme will be discarded. The new layout will automatically scale according to the device in use making the usability better for mobile users too. In initial stages the aim is to make the site fully usable with tablet devices (eg. iPad) as well as desktop devices.

* Mobile users will also see the 'mouseover tooltips', and will also see the navigation dropdown menus in the same style as desktop users.

* Routes / Route Image page has now the data split into pages (50 items per page) and the data is also searchable (filters).

(this list will be updated as work progresses; the UI/layout update is a tad slow process as each sub page and action page has to be edited separately)

As mentioned, the relocation/rebranding page will be removed.

You will still have the option to rebrand your airline though, but it will a) be available at any time, b) not cost any virtual airline money or cause image loss. But the rebranding now costs 1 Credit each time you do it (free rebranding if your name has been flagged inappropriate by admin, as it is currently too).

(Relocation will be only possible through bankruptcy)

New layout will also include some more staff adjustment tools.

Income statement page will look like this ...  (chart expanded here)

No new features but technically updated, as well as visually.

ETA for the new UI and layout is hopefully in April. There is a lot to do, as each page and sub-page has to be checked and edited manually. The general sections of the site have been finished for a while now and I am working now on the game area sub-pages one by one.

And a bit of work on Aircraft and Office area front pages too for tonight...

As mentioned before, the new layout will be "mobile smart", and here you can see screen captures (part of the screen only) of the Aircraft area front page. Pic #1 shows the desktop layout and pic #2 mobile layout. The layout scales automatically according to screen size.

For the first version of the new layout the main functions and pages will be tested and will work on small (mobile) screens, but it will not be fully complete and when it's eventually released your feedback is appreciated on the troublespots.

Aircraft production lists and global statistics pages displayed here  ...

As you can see these pages have now search and filtering options too.

Routes area main page preview.

New feature included; sales and expenses graph now shows also the numerical values for previous week's and one week's before data (ticket income, fuel costs and all expenses combined). This allows you to spot trends more easily than just looking at the chart. (and before you ask, this revenue/expenses data is not available for each travel class only combined data for each route)

(and just noticed that the trend arrows in the pic are showing the wrong way for expenses, it's fixed, no need to notify me .. :P )

And messages page has, by the way, some minor new features too with the new UI.

Reading a message is faster as it opens now directly to the same window (no full page loading needed), as shown in the picture. The main toolbar's unread message count also updates automatically without a page reload when ever you click open a message here.

There's also the possibility to check multiple messages at once and either delete them, mark as read or mark as unread (two latter are new features for the multi-use).

Routes section is under work today ...

Mainly still the same as before, the airport selection screen has one new feature with better page navigation of the results (pic #2). The "passenger amount" metric is also removed from the search results, but the default sort order of the results is still based on the airport pax count (users can sort the results still like currently).

One new feature worth previewing also (user request). Route opening screen (airport listing) shows now an icon of destinations you operate into.

As seen in next screenshot, there's the small airplane icon next to CDG and LGW airports - it means that your airline has routes from the selected base to these airports (the yellow background on CDG means that it's your other base).

Do note that the icon only indicates if you have some or none routes (= 1 route or more - icon is shown). It does not take ANY position on seat demand and supply, and it does not check any market share or demand figures (and while these could be technically added, they won't be added as the route research is one key playing element). So in other words the icon is just a small helper...

Mouseover hover brings up the explanation balloon.. (the tooltip balloons are also all-new and html5/css3 powered by the way)

Route editor page is under works at the moment, one new feature has been added - this is the possibility to open route without buying the slots.

This feature may become handy if you wish to pre-plan your routes, and you cannot spend money on the slots, or there are no slots yet, or the aircraft will arrive so late to you that you would otherwise loose the slots if you opened the route already. In other words, use the checkbox to create the route without any slots and then use the route edit function later to buy the slots for this route.

Naturally route is not flown at all before all sectors have slots.

Route editor updates are finished.

- Visual update with some items reorganized (only minor).

- New feature of slot purchase (see previous post).

- New quick price adjustment features (see screencap).

Just a small note on the tooltip popups, they are enabled and working on mobile browsers too on the new layout.

With desktop users you can get the tooltip by hovering mouse over the field (icon/link/etc) but in mobile browsers you can get the same by clicking the link. Clicking it again will remove the tooltip.

Similar click function is added to the main menu's dropdown submenus for mobile browsers. So these additional functions are now pretty same as for desktop users.

Route planning page's airport search/selection interface will be the same as route open page's.

Both pages will now also filter the search results so that any unflyable routes (for airport being too close) are automatically filtered out from the list. So all results you see should be flyable.
Title: Re: Previews: New UI and layout
Post by: Sami on April 23, 2013, 06:46:58 PM
Route planning data page is finished too.

- The page is recoded from the top since the current page was a bit messy due to conversion of the demand systems in v.1.3.

- Items reorganized partly and graphs made bigger etc.

- A new minor feature, graph of passenger types, is added (this is to be used better with future demand models where we may have different passenger types, ie. leisure and business pax etc).

- Popup page of this route planning data page does not include route map or market share items for faster page loading.

Used aircraft listing page ...

Nothing new here featurewise, just partly visually updated. The left hand filter/search menu will automatically move to top of the screen with mobile browsers (to free up space sideways). With desktop clients the filter menu automatically scrolls down with page scrolling.

Similar filters also on other aircraft pages (like previewed earlier).

The route management (list of all your routes; Routes/Manage/) page will have more powerful data filtering and searching tools. Overview of them:

- freetext search allows you to search the following: flight number, aircraft (registration), fleet group name, aircraft type (icao), aircraft model name, country name, airport name, airport icao code, airport iata code

- base airport filter shows departures from that base (shown only if you have more than 1 base)

- fleet group filter is already similar what there is currently

- aircraft filter allows the search of all routes of a single aircraft, listing is per model and per registration

- airport and country filters list all airports and countries your airline flies to.

You can combine any of these filters together to narrow the search/listing. Search results are fully sortable, as per the normal options available at the page currently too. (screenshot only partial as other parts of the page is under construction; will follow later)

Second new feature is that load factor, yield, revenue and profit values on this page show also the previous 7 day's values and the change % (if such data available).

The route listing / management page is almost finalized now for the new layout. The page is technically revised from the top and includes new features, previewed in previous post.

As mentioned in previous post, there is now a set of very useful and powerful filters that you can combine in any form to filter down the route listing results. You can search for routes of individual aircraft, or base, or airport and so forth.

Another new feature is also the change indicator on all financial and delay values. The system shows the average value of last 7 days, and also the average of previous 7 days from that and the difference percentage. Values are color-coded.

Route closure and flagging functions have also new technical features which reduce page loading times (no full page reload for these actions).

As currently, there are 3 views: Financial, Notification and Delay views. Each of them have searchable and sortable fields (ie. sort by max profit for example). Mouseover tooltip data for various fields is still included like currently too.

(this thread is locked to keep it organized, please post all comments to this thread (https://www.airwaysim.com/forum/index.php/topic,26358.0.html))

(pls. note that the change indicator in the second picture's cancellation figures wasn't complete yet in the pic; shows 0%)

Since most data listing pages will have various filters and search options, all of these pages have now also the possibility to reset all the search filters for easy new search. Here's a pic of used aircraft filters.

(filter reset does not trigger a page reload, just clears all filter selections so you can easily make a new input)

Here are two preview images of the "mobile smart" layout. The screen elements will position automatically according to the screen size available. For example the search/filters menu is on the left hand side of the screen for large desktop browsers, but for smaller screens it automatically moves to a horizontal style to the top of the screen. Other elements may have different placements too due to limited width, like here the route action buttons.

Upper screen shot from large desktop layout, lower a tablet-sized device layout.

Small new feature: when opening a new base, or when creating the airline, you can browse for the list of airports as you may know... There's now a new value "number of based airlines" in this listing. Just a simple value to show how many others are there (HQ & bases).

The route detail page is almost completed for the new layout.

It is rather similar to the current one but is technically upgraded and has some new features too. Parts of the visual style and item placement has been taken from the route editor (to avoid unnecessary re-coding and also to create similar layout).

- First picture shows the route overview, you can see here that the prices are directly editable and you have also now the quick links for routewide price adjustment. Aim for the change is to make price management easier also on this page (less clicks etc).

- Second picture shows the route price adjustment in detail. Whenever you click on some pricing field (or press the global adjustment quick links) the Save button will appear. When you click on the price field it will also display the quick links (-10% ..etc) for that individual price box.

- Third pic shows data when no a/c is assigned.

- Fourth pic shows the graphs section of the data. Graphs are bigger and resolution scalable now.

(pic2) The airport search/selection tool for base finder, slot info and airport info pages is also updated. Visually similar than new route opening and route planning search tools, no new major features.

(pic3) Country information page. No new features (apart the big flag and minor visual changes..)

(pic1) Scheduling page will have the powerful new filters too. (same as in Manage Routes page)

(pic2, pic3) Tooltips on scheduling page will contain more information too

(pic4) Visually scheduling page's flight bars are almost identical. However the whole page is technically revised from the top, since the old page was (codewise) cluttered and old. Current status is that displaying of the data works but all sub-functions are undone so far.

One clever new feature for scheduling page ...

As you saw there are numerous search and filtering tools for scheduling too. If you search for example with keyword "Fort Lauderdale" the system highlights all the found flights to that airport in red. You can then mouseover for more details of the flight .. etc.

As mentioned in the other thread, most functions of scheduling and manage routes page do not trigger a full page reload anymore. This means faster loading times, and also that your selected filters and search terms will stick despite performing some action.

For example in clearing the schedule you are just given a dialog prompt to confirm the action, and after pressing confirm the action is done at background, and the flight scheduling data is cleared on the go without a single page reload (and only one small query to the server). Similar style will be used in most of the actions on these new pages.

When adding flights or maintenance, and you get an overlap in the schedule, the system will visually point out the (first) offending flight. It highlights the route and blinks the flight bar for some seconds.

My Aircraft page has been under works for the last days. This page too is completely rebuilt from scratch and it follows the same technical style and layout as scheduling and route management page. Similar filters and search capabilities have also been introduced.

Visible data is mainly the same but there is more "embedded data" (like tooltips) and there will be more direct access to other functions and pages from this listing, as seen in the pictures.

One change to note that if reg# is not assigned the system shows the aircraft MSN# instead.

All fields are fully sortable also.

Back from holidays ..

- Aircraft seat configuration pages have been worked, layout simply updated to the new style, otherwise all same.

- My Aircraft listing page has new functions that allow you to quickly change the registration / nickname of the aircraft and to rebase the aircraft.

- You can now also rebase aircraft to a base to exceed the 100 aircraft limit, but you cannot schedule more than 100 planes per base at a time. Note that you still cannot rebase planes out of a base so that the minimum required number of planes per base would be missed. Rebasing of planes is also free now, the nomimal rebase cost has been removed for practical reasons.

- Mass rebase function (multiple planes at once) is also available in the new UI. Simply choose (with checkboxes) as many planes as you wish and rebase them at once. The planes must be at the same base and must go to the same base when using this mass-basing function.

Aircraft maintenance view (the page where you can manually assign C or D checks) is made to look a bit better, including less page loads for the repair function etc. For simplicity repair function includes now only precalculated condition % values in 5% intervals instead of a free text field.

If you wish to manually perform A or B checks the links will redirect you to scheduling page that auto-opens the A/B maintenance window where you can tick "perform the check now" like already currently.

Aircraft section of the site under new UI is almost complete now. Have worked on the ordering pages and new aircraft data/listing pages. My Aircraft details page is still unfinished. After that all that is needed is Dashboard.

Also please note that price management section of the site will not be improved under this round of updates, it is due for a larger update later on, so no time is spent on it currently as it's due to full renewal anyway..

The page follows the same layout that all other aircraft detail pages (cross-used functions for easy updating), and contains pretty much everything as previously but in a nicer format.
