Title: Spreadsheet to calculate total yearly lease costs
Post by: ksjoet on May 23, 2011, 10:23:20 PM
I've been using a spreadsheet I made some time ago to calculate yearly costs of used a/c and compare the different a/c and leases up against each other. Costs are shown as both in total and pr. seat (using the max seating capacity) from all the variables including fuel, crew costs, maintenance and monthly lease price. Things that are not calculated are overhead personell costs and commonality costs. I've made this for my personal use and not for general release so there might be some bugs (for instance on some planes the engine type doesnt show up) and I'm sure there are loads of improvement that can be done. But I figured alot of you might find it useful as it is :)

It's pretty simple to use, just open Excel, log into Airwaysim through the Excel browser, then use your favorite browser and copy the URL of the plane you want to calculate. When the URL is in your computers clipboard (only tested on Windows 7 machine, if not you have to manually paste the URL in the popup window), just click the "Calculate costs" button and the results should come up pretty quick. Each aircraft checked is stored in the "Last 20 aircrafts viewed" list, where you can easily bring them up again to recalculate if you want to change for instance either the flight time or fuel costs variable (given the aircraft is still available for lease).

Remember this is only a rough calculation of the costs, and not a 100% accurate one. For instance calculating crew costs is a though nut to crack, but I've just sat a standard that each plane has 3 full crews, even though this will vary according to how you fly the plane. Fuel costs is based on the average fuel consumption. It's meant to be a guideline to make a good airplane choice.

Spreadsheet (with some current Jet Age #4 data):

*Disclaimer:
I've only tested this on Excel 2010 and on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. Problems may arise in other versions and/or operating systems. You will also need to enable editing and make sure Excel runs those macros if you want it to work properly.

Thank you for sharing this comprehensive tool for analysing aircraft performance!

Very nice tool. Thanks for sharing it!

Is it also possible to compare new aircraft somehow with this?

Thanks :)

It's not possible to compare new aircraft with this tool, atleast not yet. It currently only works on the used aircraft marked. Making it work with new aircrafts requires alot more coding as it needs to calculate leasing vs direct purchase, and ofc all the engine and MOTW variants. Also a yearly cost isn't enough in my opinion on a new aircraft. You need to see it in a longer perspective, maybe 3 to 10 years (or more). This is ofcourse a variable that needs to be entered by the user.

Just found this while doing a search. Is there any possibility for somebody to re-upload this somewhere? This seems like a really nice tool, but the download link unfortunately is broken.

Tool hasn't been updated for v1.3 and does not work any longer.
