Title: How are you playing AWS?
Post by: Curse on May 12, 2011, 01:33:40 AM
I'm just curious how other players use their time while they check the used market, make long schedules etc.

So, starting with me.
I have a two screen (1920x1200, 1920x1080) setup and 100MBit cable internet, using Win7x64 with Firefox 3.6 and a Logitech Performance MX mouse that is really important for me because of it's special fast/slow scroll technology. It's btw the second one, the first one was destroyed by the last games and it's 7-day-schedules :P

If I'm creating schedules or, what's the most boring thing is, copy 7-day-schedules I normally have AWS with many tabs on one screen and a movie or better a series that don't need to be eyes on on the other screen (at the moment Las Vegas).

After a new game world starts I check the used market very often, so I also watch a movie or series or play some games that allow window mode and extremely fast switching for F5 etc. like World of Warcraft, RIFT, Minecraft or just serving around the web or doing things for University.

For access (used market, forums) out of my house I use a HTC Desire Android smartphone with data flatrate (up to 7.2MBit), DolphinHD Browser and Tapatalk Pro (that has a problem at my device with AWS PMs).

What about you?

Hmm, that's cool I had never thought of using it on my phone. No fancy set up here. Just have a 13in macbook pro. Typically have 3-5 tabs of AWS open and often times I'll just like poke around at the internet while on here. A lot of times also I'll be reading about airliners or things relating to airlines as well as trying to figure out what I want my next move to be as I'm still rather new to this. Only did a few weeks of DOM and beginners world in December before coming back at the end of last month.  I don't watch TV so much and only have a 13in TV lol.

I really wonder what kind of damage I could do with a setup like that. I have a 10.1" Samsung netbook that I am normally on, and a very basic Acer laptop at home.

MacBook Pro (Safari 5 for Mac)
Fujitsu Tablet PC (Safari 5 for windows)

I ALWAYS have an AWS tab open when I'm on the internet.  Periodically I check back for forum updates, game updates, etc.

I have an Intel Core i7 with a full HD screen. I also open up lots of tabs when scheduling and making routes. I'm not much of an F5 guy so you'll rarely see me do that, I do useful stuff instead ;D

At work, i5 dual core 13" HP notbook and 1900x1080 monitor side by side.  Win7 (32).  Always at least 1 tab open to AWS. Was running Firefox but IT got wind of my install and kicked me onto IE8.  (Not bad, much better than IE6 that I used to use before Firefox.  Miss my little Firefox add-ons though!)

At home, home-built beater (with filter over the 2 big fans becuase of damn cat fur!!), XP SP3, 4gb RAM and Firefox.  Boring, sad little 19" monitor.  (Thinking about getting a 27" TV and using it instead...). ADSL 2+ 20mbps.

Mobile, HTC Mozart running Windows 7, 3G with 2gb data a month.  AWS runs like a charm.  Can't schedule flights well (too fiddly for my fingers), but great for forums, checking dollars and F5-ing!

At home and work, always have AWS running.  Check in now and then, just to see what's going on.  Try to do my route planning/F5 while at work, then my scheduling when I get home.  Luckily, pretty flexible work environment, so no problems checking in at work.

What ever computer is the most close. Usually it's not my own. The most used of my own computers for AWS is an archaic 15,4" Toshiba laptop (1,73GHz Pentium M, 1,5GB RAM, WiXp home) with a 10 minute battery life. Internet is via 7,2Mbps flat rated 3G modem, connected to an Express Card USB 3.0 card, because all internal USB ports were damaged some time ago while charging a 20€ radio-controlled helicopter. The laptop is mostly used with a Logitech cordless laser mouse, which I love for its tolerance of different and poor surfaces.

If I ever have time to power up my main frame, it comes equipped with a 24" 1920x1200 S-IPS display, C2D@3,8GHz, Win7 and 10Mbps ADSL. Two windows side by side is the most effective browser arrangement. Preferred browser is always Chrome.

Samsung Galaxy Spica (with Android 2.2) and flat rated 380kbps net provides anytime access to the game. And I hate the mobile view of AWS, to which it always defaults.

AWS is mainly coded using a standard Win7 machine (Q9400, 1920x1280), development platform is NetBeans IDE.

On the road it's HP EliteBook 8440p (with AWS stuff accessible via our SVN server), and for mobile use & testing Nokia N900 and iPad 2. Android based test phone is also available.

For servers; there are three separate server computers located in Helsinki (Finland) in a high quality datacenter. One of them is exclusive for AWS, two other machines for other projects (other sites, emails, backups etc) but they can be also extended for AWS if needed (however if more server capacity is needed, the extended server would be probably an independent one located in USA). The server hardware (owned by us) is pretty standard stuff (AWS main server has a single i7 processor with 8GB RAM) since investment to "brand" servers like HP etc would have been quite heavy; perhaps in the future..

A desktop, a Dave4468 custom build (Intel Duo Core 2 3GHz, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit), normal low quality BT wireless. It's got a 22inch 1680x1050 widescreen. Also running Chrome. Thats the preferred choice, second being a Samsung netbook (which is bust now and has a battery life of about 10m), again running Chrome.

Bottom of the pile is an iPod touch.

I usually play at home on my home built desktop (wont post the specs it will put you all to shame  ::) ) with a 22" Samsung monitor (res: 1680x1050). I usually use Apple Safari 5 on my Windows 7 (64-bit). Our net connection isn't too bad, it used to go down momentarily some time ago. I'm hard wired into our network which is the middle O2 broadband package (there is also wireless). Think we get speeds of up to 20Mb/s officially but I've never got download speeds past 1.0-1.5GB/s.

On the move I use Safari browser on my iPhone 4 using 3G or wifi. It's not great because usually when I schedule on this I forget to schedule A/B checks and get caught by the CAA and fined.

If I'm working on campus I access sometimes using the uni computers which aren't too great but do the job (with some CAD or CFD simulations running in the background).

No laptop unfortunately but I want a Macbook Pro (maybe when I start earning a salary).

I use WebTV with a 28.8 baud dialup connection on a 13-inch color Sony.  I have it stacked on top of my 16-inch console TV and I typically watch Gunsmoke on my betamax while I wait for the used aircraft market to refresh.

When I'm on the road, I call my wife at home for updates on the carphone in my Cimarron.  If I'm not in my car and there is an important update, my wife and I have an elaborate numeric system where she can leave a number on my beeper (assuming I get a sig) and I can decode it for instant updates no matter where I'm at 24/7.

I've very Hi-Tech stuff !

-Celeron Coppermine 128 : 600 MHz with 128 Mb SDRAM
-Very fast internet conection (56 kbps)
-Very wide screen 15" CRT (I can say it's 3D monitor)
-OS : Windows ME with Internet Explorer 5 I can't use Flash Player 10 because IE5 does support it

When I'm @ school I use IPhone 4 ,IPad ,Sumsung Galaxy S , HTC Desire HD , BlackBerry Torch 9800 and Nokia 5235 all of them I'm borrowed from a friend.

Eh... I use a quad-core AMD w/Firefox browser on a 42" LED mounted to my wall?

I generally watch anime while I am "playing" AWS and in between eps I check AWS for aircrafts and stuff. That's probably why my "total time spent online" is so high.

I just use whatever, as long as I can still get on it, nothing at the moment, my iPhone became handy at school in the bathrooms during lunch and recess for a quick check up  ;)

And since I live in Australia, my Internet is painfully slow (unless you're in CBD)

... Actually I lie, my iPhone SUCKS when it goes on AWS, generally because it's an iPhone 3G not the fancy stuff and I'm with Vodafone... but it was still good when it eventually loaded
