It has been discussed before and there are a lot of choices out there that can be implemented into the site. Meebo for instance runs at the bottom of page and you just add friends from what ever IM service you have. I would find it nice to chat with people while stalking the used market.
Now the "stalking used market" thing would be pretty bad, as people will be camping the used market even more in that case. I can't see how a chat room for the entire game world would work, since it'd turn out pretty nasty as is always the case in chat rooms. Moreover, more moderators will be needed to tame the unleashed beast that is anonymity.
But an in-alliance chatroom would be great. It reduces the number of players in a chat room making it less cluttered and confusing, you could arrange meetings a lot easier and there is no need to moderate since people from an alliance usually get along anyway (as far as my experience within WorldLink is concerned).
Of course, you could always use an external chat client for this. But having it implemented makes it more appealing for members to actually use it, in my opinion.
There is an official AirwaySim-IRC-Channel. I quit it a while ago because it's often very silent and lots of samis (real life) friends seem to be there, so I felt a bit awkward sometimes. (no offense ;))
A chat to talk about AWS and other things could be nice, but it depends on how much people will be there and how active they are.
i think live chat for alliance would be best. you would not have to worry about extra moderators then.
Personally from a new players P.O.V it would be nice if there was a chat for each game, as well as one for alliances.. one for the whole game world on the other hand is perhaps a bit too much.
