Title: No demand on routes?
Post by: johnlattanzio on January 21, 2011, 04:21:56 AM
Hi All
I have noticed that on some routes I inquire about, I am
told there is no demand between the two cities in question.
Suppose they are A and B.

But if I go to the destination airport (B), list the destinations
flown from that airport, I will find A and some flights scheduled.
If I then click on "manage route" then I get a plot that DOES have
demand between A and B.

This can be important! I would have missed the demand totally
if I had not investigated further. IS THIS A BUG?

Next question - if there currently is no flight scheduled
from B to A then I cannot use this method to see if there really
is any demand. So how can I tell if there really is NO demand
or it just is not showing up????

thanks!

JL

Can you show a screenshot of A-B planning and B-A planning?

Because if there's a B-A flight, there must be an A-B flight too.

Yes. That is not the problem. The A-B does not show up when I use the "Open Route" screen. But it shows up when I go to airport B and look at the  B-A flown from that airport...then I can get a histogram of the demand on the route.

I will upload pics.

Hmmm. Does not seem to be doing it now :-)

Fault may lie in ME and not the code. I will post here if it does it again :-)

Should I assume that no histogram on a route means NO demand on that route?
Sometimes that seems unlikely - eg big cities involved.

I am told there is NO demand from Tokyo to Canberra. I find that hard to believe.

Is it that the game makes assumptions on the size of the airport or something?
Independent of it being the Country cpaital???

Yes.  About 99% of the routes in the game are simply a function of a Size X airport and a Size Y airport having XXX demand per day.  And that is modified by whether its a domestic or international destination (smaller airports have almost no international demand, no matter the size of the city connecting to) and also to the distance apart (closer destinations, even if they're both large airports, will have less demand than further).  It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's it in general.

Canberra, capital of Australia or not, is not presently (and rarely has been in the past) an international airport.  It's quite small really.  And that's reflected here.

Yep. The video in the youtube thread of the Ilyushin using every last bit of runway is from Canberra. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWtdtuspnoM http://www.canberraairport.com.au/air_flight_info/flight_map.cfm is the real-life route map from Canberra. Almost all the flights go to Sydney/Melbourne/Brisane.
