Title: Boeing 757/767 Commonality Costs.
Post by: blaker1984 on October 26, 2010, 02:13:23 AM
Sami,

Just a thought, but I was looking at the commonality costs for the 757/767 first time ive operated both types yet they have completely seperate costs. However the aircraft are designed in tandem and Boeing designed the cockpit for easy transition same as the A330/340. So I'm wondering if in the coming games this can be looked at. As one of the reasons for operating both types was to save in commonality, yet the costs in the game are as if I was using two totally different aircraft.

Thanks,
Blaker

"Commonality" in AWS is in reference, not to type rating commonality, but rather commonality of maintenance items.

In that respect the 757 and 767 are quite different -- certainly far moreso than the A330/340 comparison. Whereas the 757/767 similarities almost entirely end at the cockpits, the A330/340 family are virtually identical save for the addition of 2 more engines on the A340s.

In the current system of commonality they could be included in the same fleet because they both cruise at Mach 0.80.

This abstract (http://papers.sae.org/810845/)from a paper indicates the levels of flight deck and engine/parts commonality.

I read elsewhere that parts commonality between the 757 and 767 is around the order of ~50% because they were designed in tandem.

50% is quite good seeing as there is 67% between 737CL and 737NG and ~80% between E170 and E190.

Sigma is, however, right in saying it is no way near the levels of A330 and A340 which are basically the same airframe but I see your comparison blaker.

From What I understand, The difference between families is that the A330/340 share Fuselage and wings where as 757/767 have different fuselages and wings but all the avionics, instruments, etc are the same. I can't see cost of maintenance being affected by the different wings/ fuselage so in my opinion they should be in the same group.

This has been discussed before, but I can't find the thread!

Commonality in not only for pilots. You have TCPs, mechanics, chief mechanics, engineers, dispatchers, etc.

Technicians, engineers, etc. are interested in avionics and the other things mentioned above :-\
