What about making a pool of players from the same country/region working as a team against other countries/region?
Like:
BeNeLux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxemburg)
USA
Japan/South Korea
Canada
Germany/Switzerland/Austria
UK/Ireland
China/India
Current alliances would NOT take part as new alliances will be formed, and you will be added to them based on your geographical location.

I'd rather split up China and India, since they are big, and [I don't know though] the possibility, that there is a high number of players from there is big!
