Title: Newbie question about flight time, mach and turn-around time in route planning
Post by: Dookz on January 18, 2010, 05:14:58 PM
The route RJAA-VDSR is 2382nm on a B737 with speed of Mach .74. It says flight time is  6hrs 30mins in route planning. But the departure is at 6:00 local and arrival is 10:30 local, that only adds up to 4hrs and 30 minutes. Does the Departure and and arrival time account only for the period the moment the wheels rotate and touchdown and not including taxi and boarding time?

For this calculation what speed (knots or mph) was used for the 737? I'm thinking 30,000 feet for .74 Mach and it would turn out to be 552 mph and thats where the 4hrs 30 mins might come from but I'm not sure. Just want to plan ahead before I even touch the route planning portion.

And in regards to the turn-around time, I've always been wondering if I'm doing this right. There is a turn-around time I can set at VDSR when flying back to RJAA (40mins minimum on 737) and I always set it much higher than that, but I noticed that on Scheduling when I hover my mouse on the blue bar, the time you can depart again is always fixed at 40mins on the B737 after arrival in local time. My question is would it make any difference if I depart "again" 30 minutes after the time it says I can depart again which would make it a "70 minute turn time" or is it just a waste of time? The way I scheduled my planes now there is always a little white gap between each bar, which I did in purpose.

The apparent time issue is because of the time difference.  Cambodia is UTC+7, whereas Japan is UTC+9  :)

In terms of turnaround time, I always find it best to set schedules apart so that the risk of a delay is less than 10%.  For a 737 this would either be 1 hour turnaround, or 1hr 5 mins turnaround.  The little white bar is also good - if you have continous blue on your scheduling page, your cancellations and delays will be sky high.

lol at the UTC I just remembered that now thinking it might be that and it is!

And in turn around time, if the aircraft is scheduled tightly with no white bar in between and it's suppose to go to A or B maintenance, is the maintenance delayed?

You NEED to shedule the A and B checks within the aircraft sheduling otherwise the plane will be GROUNDED by the authorities.

Your aircraft never skip A or B maintenance (unless you can't afford it or you've not scheduled it.)  I would assume from this that flights would be cancelled if your aircraft is off schedule.

is the maintenance delayed?

You can start A/B right after the plane is on ground + turnaround time is passed (disembarking of pax). There are no maint. delays modeled so far.
