I would like to know how the alliance rankings work and how joining a alliance with a lower or higher rating might effect an airline.

Alliance rating is similar to CI (but not even remotely as influential in my experience). The better the alliance, the more likely the pax are to travel on you.
It is earned by having a larger number of members, the relative strength of all the members, and a greater variety of members. In worldwide games this means the more airlines you have spread all over, the faster you earn rating. I'm not sure just how it works on continental games.
