Air Florida Announces Opening of Cold Bay Alaska Maintenance and Support Base

Started by tcrlaf, February 06, 2024, 06:12:12 AM

Air Florida is announcing the opening of a new Maintenance and Logistics Support base at the former Thornborough Air Force Base in Cold Bay, Alaska, in support of our new Passenger and Cargo operations to Asia and China.

This new base, located over 900 miles west of Anchorage in the Aleutian Islands chain, was first established during World War 2, and later became an important facility with a deep water port supporting Air Transport to Asia, and a major part of the "Distant Early Warning System". The 10,000+ foot main runway, modern navigation aids, year-round mild (for Alaska) weather and central location on the Great Circle Route between Asia and North America make it an important auxilliary field for operations in the north, as well as an emergency airport for aircraft with issues that require a diversion.

Starting with a permanent staff of 8, as well as several local residents, and a large temporary hangar, the base will eventually have as many as 50 employees, many on two-month long voluntary rotations from among our 100,000+ employees in the United States, capable of servicing up to 10-15 cargo flights per day, plus any other airline finding the need of emergency services while transiting to or from Asia.

Our new Cold Bay base reinforces our commitment to provide outstanding services to our new customers, both in Asia and in North America.
