Covid Impact
« on: November 09, 2021, 04:51:57 PM »
Adding Covid impact that reduces demand for a year or so would be interesting. It can be a generic infectious diseases in modern times (post 2001) that reduces domestic demand significantly and international demand even more. Maybe domestic by 50% and International by 75%. Would be an interesting challenge. One change vs just reducing demand is it would reduce fuel prices significantly for let’s say 6 months.

I think we already have a small-scale pandemic event that happen for a short time.

For covid, the impact would be too large, many other functions have to be changed, too; like firing staff w/o losing CI, less staff needed for the same amount of work, leased A/C payment got frozen, financial aid from government, pax demand decrease but willing to pay double/triple the price for the service, etc

Yeps, making it realistically would mean an unsurvivable scenario for 95% of the players. We did model it for a special game last year but there the impact was still unknown in real life, so the game event wasn't too harsh either.

Would your airline survive a 95% traffic stop for a month, and 90% reduction for 6 months, and then a plainly slow recovery of 3+ years?

But a generic random event once in a long game, with less severe effects would be good.

or with 60B$ in reserves : easy as well. But it would be too hard as a filter, I fear.

11/09 kills a handful of player not ready, and that's it.

I know this is an old thread, but I've noticed we get the pandemic drop in oil cost but no drop in demand = massive profits during this period of the game, so it seems there should be SOMETHING in this simulation to cover the most impactful world event to aviation since 9-11.

Now that we pretty much know the effect, the model could be added. But it really can't be a total global lock down for months on end, since while realistic, it would be really difficult to manage .. so perhaps some a bit less restrictive model.

Maybe one month 90%+ shutdown (almost $0 revenue, but same costs and very very very cheap fuel), then a gradual return in increments.

The idea is not to kill 100+ players but definitely make it difficult - 9/11 has a minimal impact as it is.

Frankly, the reason why so many players leave GWs is that it is impossible to be challenged after 9/11, thus people lose interest and just shut their airline down. A tough covid event that would challenge all players would keep it interesting.
