How do you avoid double slot costs when you adjust a route?

For example adding a techstop on one leg, but leaving either the arrival or departure time the same. When opening the route editor a techstop cannot be added. So a new route has to be opened. Now paying only for one new set of slots is ok, but it shows me slot costs for both airports.

When the new route is created and then the old one closed but with keeping the slots, are these then refunded? Or does the old route have to be closed (with keeping the slots) first and then the new, modified one opened?

when you close the old route, there is a box that says "keep slots". Make sure this is ticked. Don't close a route and release the slots, no refund is given and yes you'll need to buy them again at full price! If you keep slots but don't use them they then expire about 4 weeks later and are available to everybody.

So basically you have to close the old route first, keep the slots and then open the new route?

exactly.
...and if the messages warning you about expiring slots start driving you crazy, you can disable them in the settings page.
