[-] speed/travel time oddities between TU144 & Concorde
« on: May 05, 2019, 07:03:28 AM »
I'm not 100% sure of that one, but it looks problematic.

So, game is GW2, I'm based in SGN/VVTS, and I'm toying with possible plannings with supersonics (not that it would be wise to use them, but it would be fun).

I'm having a look at the speed specs : Concorde is Mach 2.00 / 1150 kts TAS , TU-144 is Mach 2.20 / 1260 kts TAS. Sounds like the TU-144 should be quicker, at least in the air.

But the time travel is notably inferior with the Concorde. Because of time in the air. Concorde is said to be 2h42 in the air one way, and 2h33 on the way back. TU-144 3h00, and 2h51. I can understand a few unseen factors like acceleration, but 18 extra minutes of flight for the faster jet? Even though the equivalent air distance is slightly longer for the concorde(12NM one way, 10NM the other way), which is coherent with the slightly slower speed of the concorde.

Another similar route, SGN-NGO, 2206NM. Time in the air for the Concorde is 2h42/2h33, for TU-144 2h56/2h51. So a similar difference, more than 15 minutes of time advantage for the Concorde that I find no explanation for.

And, for checking with a very short distance, SGN-DMK(401NM), 0h53/0h55 in the air for the concorde, 1h01/1h08for the TU-144. Around 10 minutes of difference. So the longer the distance, the slower the fastest plane is comparatively. Which I find surprising.

The 2.0/2.2 ratings are for cruise speed, does not account for time to get to cruise, which can vary enough to make the differences that you're seeing...

The climb/descent speed profiles are different and Tu-144 data is also rather inaccurate still. On a short <2hr flight you're at the cruising level for a relatively short time.

=> Not a bug
